Requirements

  • Ability to foster and facilitate teamwork by cultivating relationships, counseling, collaborating, and effectively communicating with business partners and teammates
  • Ability to think outside of the box, develop creative and effective legal solutions, using a business-oriented approach
  • Demonstrated ability to successfully manage multiple projects, while meeting all project goals
  • Excellent legal research skills
  • Strong negotiation skills
  • Excellent legal and business judgment
  • Ability to prioritize and coordinate projects and cases
  • Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communications skills to effectively interact with legal colleagues, management and Aflac staff
  • Ability to provide business-oriented legal advice
  • Juris doctor from an ABA-accredited school of law
  • 7 years of legal experience in a combination of law firm and corporate settings
  • Or an equivalent combination of education and experience

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with supplemental, group, voluntary or individual insurance (life, disability, dental /vision, specified disease)
  • Working Knowledge of ERISA
  • Experience working on an operations legal team in-house
  • Litigation experience

Responsibilities

  • Review the law and the insurance contract, break down complicated legal language and help the business to understand parameters.
  • Think outside of the box. You will help the business to not only understand the parameters of the law, but to come up with creative solutions for complying.
  • Make connections. You will look at the business as a whole and help bring consistency to operational areas. You will work in all of areas of operations: product, underwriting, eligibility, claims, appeals, complaints and litigation. You will have the ability to look at “lessons learned” and help the business to find solutions for past problems.
  • Be part of project teams. You will join the business in important projects, advising and taking an active role in looking at the law and business solutions.
  • Jump in where needed. You will have the ability to review many different documents that come your way. You will need to know how to investigate issues, partner with the business and be an active part of the legal team and the extended business team.
