About The Position

The employee in this position will serve as the Senior Assistant Resident Engineer in the Resident Engineer’s Office located in Robeson County, NC. This role is responsible for minor and/or major construction projects, supervising employees, and preparing and evaluating their performance. The employee must be proficient at plan reading, highway engineering calculations, and using survey instruments for the stake-out of line grade for roadways and structures. Duties include preparing monthly and final estimates, and engaging in written and oral communication with contractors, inspection personnel, utility companies, and the public to ensure compliance with contract plans, standards, and specifications. This employee will also evaluate data collected by field personnel, prepare technical letters and reports, and review contract plans, specifications, and materials testing results. The position requires minimal supervision from the Resident Engineer and the selected candidate will be expected to operate a state vehicle.

Requirements

  • Proficient at plan reading.
  • Proficient at highway engineering calculations.
  • Proficient with the survey instruments necessary to supervise the stake-out of line grade for roadways and structures.
  • Bachelor’s degree in an applicable field of engineering from an appropriately accredited institution and three (3) years of progressively responsible experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • May require registration as a professional engineer by the North Carolina Board of Examiners for Engineers and Surveyors.

Nice To Haves

  • Knowledge of contract administration to ensure projects are constructed in accordance with the department’s specifications, standard drawings and policies.
  • Experience interpreting construction plans, provisions, specifications, policies, procedures, and regulations.
  • Experience in performing engineering analysis on complex contract administration issues, and the timely approval/denial of these issues through supplemental agreements and claims.
  • Experience in supervising subordinate employees, to include supervision of Construction Engineering Inspection personnel, to meet department goals.
  • Customer service experience related to resolving problems that involve explaining engineering concepts to various customer groups.
