About The Position

The Sr Applied Scientist on the WWOS Tech team is responsible for detecting theft, fraud, and organized crime across Amazon's global supply chain and operations, involving millions of items and billions of dollars in inventory worldwide. This role focuses on building compelling cases, utilizing data to influence organizational change, and creating intelligent, self-learning systems to maximize cost savings from inventory losses. The individual will have autonomy to make data-driven decisions that significantly impact customer experience and fraud investigations. Ideal candidates are strategic and analytical graduates with a PhD in Research, Statistics, Engineering, or Supply Chain, possessing a history of building fraud detections and identifying organized crime. The position requires the ability to work both collaboratively within a team and independently in ambiguous environments.

Requirements

  • 5+ years of building machine learning models for business application experience
  • PhD, or Master's degree and 6+ years of applied research experience
  • Experience programming in Java, C++, Python or related language
  • Experience with neural deep learning methods and machine learning

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with modeling tools such as R, scikit-learn, Spark MLLib, MxNet, Tensorflow, numpy, scipy etc.
  • Experience with large scale distributed systems such as Hadoop, Spark etc.

Responsibilities

  • Own KPIs that measure theft/fraud management performance and efficiencies.
  • Detect and automate theft, fraud MOs
  • Detect organized crime rings and bad actor clusters
  • Perform end to end evaluation of operational defects, system gaps, and scaling challenges (both system and operational).
  • Contribute to the overall fraud management and product development strategies.
  • Present key learnings and vision to stakeholders and leadership.
  • Integrate ML detection models via software applications
