The Ministry of Advanced Education is responsible for an adult learning system that provides accessible, affordable, and high-quality education for Albertans. The ministry prepares Albertans for lifelong success through education by approving programs of study; funding public post-secondary institutions and other adult learning providers; providing financial aid for learners; registering and certifying apprentices; and supporting academic research and innovation. The Governance, Policy and Engagement division provides leadership and coordination for all aspects of the policy development cycle, intergovernmental relations, governance and legislative services, ministry agency membership appointments, planning and reporting services, and the ministry’s corporate services functions. It oversees tuition and monitors compliance among post-secondary institutions with tuition and fee regulations and policies and oversees grant management of several programs aimed at enhancing student supports on campus and supports different learning pathways through management of the provincial transfer credit system. It works with Indigenous communities and learning providers to strengthen opportunities and supports for Indigenous learners. The division is also responsible for implementation of and compliance with domestic trade agreements and Alberta’s labour mobility legislation, including pan-Canadian collaboration to streamline processes, and reduce barriers to credential recognition and registration for professionals coming to work in Alberta. As part of the ministry’s Governance, Policy and Engagement division, the Planning, Reporting and Performance Measurement (PRPM) unit leads department-wide planning and reporting processes, supports strategic initiatives, and coordinates engagement, facilitation and consultation activities to advance the ministry’s priorities and performance outcomes. These include: Business planning and annual reporting; Post-secondary institutions’ annual reporting; Strategic and operational planning and reporting; Enterprise risk management (ERM); Development and maintenance of ministry and system outcomes, performance measures and indicators; Alberta 2030 initiatives tracking; and Implementation of unit assigned Office of the Auditor General recommendations.
