About The Position

This role focuses on applied agent engineering, building tool-using AI systems on real business data and embedding them into daily workflows. The engineer will collaborate with various departments (HR, Sales, Customer Success, Coach Operations, Legal, and Finance) to understand work processes, apply AI to fit existing workflows, and reimagine future possibilities. BetterUp is described as a company of AI builders with leadership support for AI initiatives. This position aims to increase team leverage and rebuild processes around AI capabilities.

Requirements

Experimentation with new models, agent frameworks, and orchestration patterns.
Familiarity with Claude, Anthropic SDK, and MCP.
Experience replacing parts of work or life with self-built agents.
Reading model release notes and paying for tools out-of-pocket.
Strong opinions on agent frameworks for specific problems.
Publishing work through open-source, write-ups, demos, or conference talks.
7+ years of engineering experience with a track record of shipping scalable systems.
Ability to understand non-technical operators' workflows and translate them into agents or automations.
A founder's bias for action and a senior engineer's focus on quality.
Full-lifecycle ownership of projects, including production bug fixing.
Comfort with ambiguity and a preference for finding the right work.

Responsibilities

Map workflows, define success metrics, and decide on automation versus redesign.
Build infrastructure for reliable agents, including MCP servers, stateful sub-agents, agent skills, and instrumentation.
Integrate across BetterUp's systems such as Slack, Jira, Salesforce, Okta, Workday, Google Workspace, and AWS.
Set standards for effective, safe, and reliable agentic access, handling sensitive data.
Develop reusable skills and tools for company-wide use.
Review other builders' integrations, share patterns, and improve the capabilities of non-engineers.
