About The Position

We have the following urgent role with our DIRECT client. The position is for a Microsoft SQL Server DBA with 3 to 5 years of experience. The primary focus will be on migrating SQL Server versions from 2008R2, 2012, 2014, 2016, to newer versions, with a preference for migrating to Azure Cloud. The role involves collaborating with application owners, understanding their needs, and executing migration strategies. If cloud migration is not feasible, on-premise installations and configurations will be performed. The DBA will be responsible for setting up high availability features, managing backups and recovery, performing routine maintenance, and decommissioning old servers.

Requirements

3 to 5 years of experience with Microsoft SQL Server RDBMS platform.
Experience with SQL Versions: 2008R2, 2012, 2014, 2016, 2017 migrations.
Knowledge of structured query language (SQL), specifically Transact-SQL.
Knowledge of SQL Server Installation and upgrades (in-place vs side-by-side upgrades).
General knowledge of the Azure portal and ability to navigate it effectively.
Knowledge of PowerShell and its use with SQL Server and Azure modules.
General understanding of the Windows operating system.
In-depth knowledge of SQL High Availability features like mirroring, AlwaysOn, Distributed Availability Groups (DAG).
Understanding of database backups, recovery, and handling failover of a database.
General understanding of routine database maintenance.
General understanding of distributed computing (Client–server model).
Ability to effectively communicate with application owners.

Nice To Haves

Experience with Azure Cloud migrations.

Responsibilities

Migrate Microsoft SQL Server versions from 2008R2, 2012, 2014, 2016, to newer versions.
Communicate with application owners to understand migration needs and provide details on steps, pros, and cons of new SQL Server versions.
Facilitate Sherpa consultation for Azure IaaS/PaaS roadmap determination.
Assist in deploying SQL Servers (IaaS) via Managed Services if cloud migration is approved.
Install and configure SQL Server on on-premise VMs if cloud migration is not approved.
Migrate databases to new destination servers.
Set up mirroring and perform failover for Point-In-Time data migration.
Add databases to Availability Groups (AlwaysOn Availability Group) for 2 or more node clusters.
Configure Distributed Availability Groups (DAG) for Disaster Recovery on Azure Production servers.
Migrate SQL Logins and Jobs.
Verify and migrate other services such as Integration Services and Full Text Indexes.
Verify and migrate other dependencies to the destination server.
Ensure connections are pointed to the new server.
Rename databases on the old server.
Decommission old servers.
