About The Position

Correctional professionals who foster a humane and secure environment and ensure public safety by preparing individuals for successful reentry into our communities. Designs and implements leisure-time activities in the areas of individual and team sports, and promotes maximum involvement of institution inmates in recreation activities and services through the establishment of leagues, tournaments, etc. Plans the institution's sports program, to include intramural sports programs and tournaments, as well as additional activities made possible through available resources. Develops, improvises, and adapts the various recreational activities to the wide range of participant interests and needs, and must meet the limitation of funds, facilities, equipment, and volunteer and other staff support available. Along with all other correctional institution employees, incumbent is charged with responsibility for maintaining security of the institution. The staff's correctional responsibilities precede all others required by this position and are performed on a regular and recurring basis.

Requirements

  • U.S. Citizenship is Required.
  • Major study -- physical education.
  • General Experience (for GS-5 positions): Experience that provided a knowledge of the physical and psychological factors in individual and team sports, and the nature, purposes, and organization of recreational or competitive individual and team sports.
  • Specialized Experience (for positions above GS-5): Experience that demonstrated the ability to: Plan, supervise, administer, or carry out a sports program that includes a variety of individual and team sports; and Guide participants in developing the skills needed for participation in sports activities and to teach the techniques of various sports.
  • 1 full year of graduate level education or Superior Academic Achievement.
  • At least one year of specialized experience equivalent in difficulty and complexity to the next lower grade level.
  • Experience in developing team sports, activities and tournaments.
  • Experience in developing and overseeing a recreation program's daily operation and primarily organize and direct participants.
  • Experience in developing the skills needed for participation to include teaching the techniques and rules of sports to participants, officials and umpires in a recreational program.
  • Must provide legible transcripts as verification of educational requirement if education is a requirement/substitution for specialized experience.
  • Transcripts MUST be uploaded and electronically linked from USAJOBS at the time you apply and MUST include identifying information to include School Name, Student Name, Degree and Date Awarded (if applicable).
  • All academic degrees and coursework must be completed at a college or university that has obtained accreditation or pre-accreditation status from an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education.
  • Applicants MUST provide a transcript in order to be considered under S.A.A.
  • If you are selected for this position and qualified based on education (i.e. basic education requirement and/or substitution of education), you will be required to provide an OFFICIAL transcript prior to your first day on duty.
  • A maximum entry age of 36 has been established for original appointment to a position in a Bureau of Prisons institution.
  • If you are above the maximum entry age and have prior federal law enforcement coverage, you MUST submit an SF-50 to verify prior coverage.
  • Qualified Preference Eligible Veterans may be exempt from meeting the maximum age.
  • Appointment is subject to satisfactory completion of a pre-employment and panel interview, urinalysis, physical, and background investigation.
  • All applicants are subject to, and must satisfactorily pass all screening requirements in relation to National Crime Information Center (NCIC) and credit check.
  • All applicants not currently working in an institution will be required to complete a qualification inquiry regarding convictions of misdemeanor crimes of domestic violence in order to be authorized to carry a firearm.
  • Successful completion of the "Introduction to Correctional Techniques", three-week training course at Glynco, Georgia is required.
