NEPM Sports Reporter Internship Fall 2026

About The Position

This internship is for a UMass student to work alongside NEPM senior reporters to learn the basics of sports reporting and produce local sports stories for radio, NEPM's website, and social media channels. This position is based at NEPM's office in downtown Springfield and does not have a remote option. GBH internships provide students with valuable work experience and real-world knowledge across many different fields of study.

Requirements

  • Interested in journalism and sports
  • Familiarity with news writing required
  • Knowledge of Canva and Adobe Suite (Premiere Pro, Photoshop) required
  • Ability to work under deadline
  • Collaborative approach and nature
  • Meticulous attention to detail and accuracy in work and presentation
  • Willingness to learn
  • Punctual
  • Candidates must have their own computer and access to Wi-Fi.
  • Candidates must be in an Undergrad or Grad program and have work authorization for the United States.

Nice To Haves

  • Familiarity with interviewing preferred
  • Familiarity with digital audio production preferred
  • Access to a car and ability to drive preferred

Responsibilities

  • Reports to senior reporter and News Department Executive Editor
  • Work independently and to cover sports feature content in western Massachusetts.
  • Schedule and perform interviews in the studio, by telephone and in the field.
  • Report, voice and mix audio stories.
  • Draft digital stories.
  • Create social posts.
