About The Position

Under the supervision of the Sports Director or designated supervisor, and in harmony with the mission and purpose of the established policies and goals of the YMCA of the Virginia Peninsulas, the Certified Sports Referee is responsible for officiating sports games, ensuring participants’ safety and well-being at all times. The role involves supporting the YMCA's mission, promoting a professional work environment through character development by modeling the values of caring, honesty, respect and responsibility. The referee will lead in a manner that advances the cause to strengthen the foundations of community through programs that focus on youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. This includes exhibiting professional appearance and behavior at all times, in appropriate official uniform, and communicating immediately with the Program Director or designated staff if there is a conflict with the staff schedule. The safety of players, coaches, and parents is of utmost concern. The referee will administer rules for the appropriate sport and communicate the YMCA Sports philosophy. They must show up at the scheduled time to ensure equipment and the playing surface are clean and safe before play, and coaches are ready to start on time. Building relationships with players, coaches, and parents by interacting with them before, during, and after each game is essential. The referee will start and end each game on time, communicate violations and explain them to players and coaches in a positive manner, and assist with the transition between games to allow for ample warm-up time. Following department Platinum standards, maintaining the cleanliness of the playing field/gym and surrounding area, and adhering to mandated abuse reporting requirements are also key responsibilities. The role includes promoting and participating in YMCA fundraising efforts and attending staff meetings and trainings as scheduled. Wearing the staff uniform and name tag, or professional attire when appropriate, is required. The referee will act as a leader in emergency situations, report any accidents or incidents according to the Emergency Communication Action Plan, and ensure all members, guests, and program participants are in a safe environment and actively follow the center's Emergency Operations Plan (EOP). Other related duties as deemed necessary by the Youth and Teen Department and center operations to ensure an excellent member experience will be carried out.

Requirements

Minimum of 18 years of age.
Must have at least 2 years’ experience in program area.
Must have a Nationally Recognized Certification.
Certification in CPR/First Aid/AED/O2.
Complete and maintain required trainings to include but not limited to: New Employee Orientation (NEO), Bloodborne Pathogens, Child Abuse Prevention (CAP), and Harassment Prevention upon hire and annually thereafter.
Ability to observe children’s behavior, assess its appropriateness, enforce appropriate safety regulations and emergency procedures, and apply appropriate behavior-management techniques.
Ability to communicate and work with assigned ages and skill levels and provide necessary instruction to participants.
Visual and auditory ability to identify and respond to environmental and other hazards related to assigned activities.
Physical ability to respond appropriately to emergencies and those situations requiring first aid.
Physical strength and endurance required to maintain constant supervision of children.
Must be able to occasionally lift and/or move up to 40 pounds.

Building relationships with players, coaches, and parents by interacting with them before, during, and after each game.
Starting and ending each game on time.
Communicating violations and explaining to players and coaches why the violation was called in a positive manner.
Assisting with the transition between games to allow for ample warm-up time for each team.
Following department Platinum standards.
Maintaining the cleanliness of the playing field/gym and surrounding area.
Following mandated abuse reporting requirements.
Promoting and participating in YMCA fundraising efforts to include Annual Support and United Way Campaigns.
Attending staff meetings and trainings as scheduled.
Wearing staff uniform and name tag, or professional attire when appropriate.
Acting as a leader in emergency situations.
Reporting any accidents or incidents according to Emergency Communication Action Plan.
