About The Position

The City of Aurora's Parks, Recreation and Open Space (PROS) Department is seeking motivated individuals for the current and future Sports Program Assistant position. This role is part of the Recreation Division and involves managing sports programs and facilities while ensuring quality customer service. The selected candidate will work under the general supervision of the Sports Superintendent. This is a Variable Hour Non-Benefit Employee (VHNE) position, working less than 29 hours per week, and does not provide medical benefits. Sick leave is earned in accordance with the Healthy Families and Workplace Act. The hiring rate for this role is $18.00/hour.

Requirements

  • High School diploma
  • At least 6 months of experience working with individuals with disabilities in recreation programs or similar activities
  • Ability to obtain a Colorado Driver's License with a good driving record.
  • Sports Officiating certifications desired.
  • Ability to obtain a Colorado Driver's License with a good driving record.
  • Current CPR and First Aid certification required or the ability to obtain certification within 6 months.
  • Considerable knowledge of recreation philosophy, planning, and administration.
  • Skill in operation of listed tools and equipment.
  • Considerable knowledge of officiating, sports, and recreation.
  • Ability to develop, coordinate, and direct varied activities involved in a community recreation program.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, supervisors, other agencies, participants, instructors, community leaders, and the general public.
  • Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to plan for and supervise staff and volunteers.
  • Strong organizational and interpersonal skills.
  • Strong computer skills to include, keyboarding, Microsoft Office suites to include Word, Xcel and Power Point and internet.
  • The ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees and citizens and private organizations.
  • The ability to respond to customer inquiries and complaints in a timely manner.
  • The ability to motivate staff, create a positive work environment, and hold staff accountable for achieving measurable goals and developing their skills.
  • The ability to handle sensitive and stressful situations with tact and diplomacy.
  • Communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to recognize, analyze, and implement needed organizational systems.
  • Valid state driver’s license or ability to obtain one.

  • Sports Officiating certifications desired.

Responsibilities

  • Timely initiation of all assigned activities, games, and programs, including last-minute facility set-up.
  • Adherence to all schedules provided by Sports Staff, including referees, officials, community service, game times, and practice times.
  • Making decisions regarding crowd control, inclement weather, darkness, and lightning.
  • Answering and interpreting questions and problems regarding rules and regulations during athletic events.
  • Maintaining accurate records for community service individuals, league standings (when applicable), and other part-time staff under their supervision.
  • Officiating games when necessary.
  • Possessing general knowledge of assigned sports, including rules and regulations, and understanding how the game is played, including principles, practice, and techniques.
  • Making proper calls and accepting criticism.
  • Handling participants, team managers, and/or coaches during difficult game situations.
  • Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with fellow employees, various community organizations, and the public.
  • Supervising and coordinating leagues, coaches, and fields.
  • Training, scheduling, and supervising umpires.
  • Inputting registrations and forming teams.
  • Evaluating umpires, checking fields, and field preparation.
  • Conflict resolution and providing customer service for coaches, parents, and team players.
  • Assisting with facility operations duties at ASP or Olympic Park.
  • Contributing website content.
  • Performing other duties as assigned.
