About The Position

The City of Sioux City Parks and Recreation Department is seeking to hire enthusiastic instructors for the Learn to Skate program at the IBP Ice Center. Instructors will teach ice-skating skills to participants of all ages and abilities, and create a fun, safe, encouraging learning environment. Program Requirements: Three (3) six-week sessions running from October - May. Weekend evening hours required. Each lesson is scheduled for approximately 1.5 hours including set up, instruction, and tear down. Communicate with participants, parents, and staff.

Requirements

  • Experience with ice skating and teaching ice skating lessons preferred.
  • Ability to work well with children and individuals of varying skill levels.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relations with the public and players.
  • Ability to prepare adequate and accurate reports on disputes over decisions during games.
  • Skill in making prompt and equitable decisions in umpiring assigned games.
  • Apply common sense understanding to the work process, procedures, programs and services.
  • Ability to speak clearly so others can understand you.
  • Ability to identify and understand the speech of another person.
  • Ability to listen to and understand information and ideas presented through spoken words and sentences.
  • Ability to operate calmly and effectively under stressful conditions.
  • Works independently and makes good sound judgment for a successful event.
  • The position is expected to maintain an awareness of potential problems while creating a respectful and welcoming activities.
  • Thorough knowledge of the rules, regulations, principles, techniques, and equipment applicable to assigned sport.

  • Ability to quickly learn and use new skills and knowledge brought about by rapidly changing information and/or technology.

  • Read in English and compare similarities and differences between words and series of numbers.

  • Regularly lifts up to 10 pounds and occasionally lifts up to 30 pounds.
  • Good physical condition: ability to see details at close range (within a few feet of the observer), ability to see details at a distance.
  • High school diploma or GED preferred.
  • Experience in professional athletic work, coaching, or in ice skating preferred, or Any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.

Nice To Haves

  • U.S. Figure Skating certificate preferred but not required.

Responsibilities

  • Officiates a variety of intramural sporting events, games, activities, or competitions, to maintain standards of play and to ensure that game rules are observed.
  • Inspects sporting equipment and/or examine participants in order to ensure compliance with event and safety regulations.
  • Keeps track of event times, including race times and elapsed time during game segments, starting, or stopping play when necessary.
  • Reports to field before game time.
  • Assesses performances in sporting competitions in order to award points, impose scoring penalties, and determine results.
  • Tactfully resolves claims of rule infractions or complaints by participants and assess any necessary penalties, according to regulations.
  • Officiates or evaluates activities occurring either indoor or outdoor depending on activity/sport.
  • Uses appropriate signals and mechanics.
  • Maintains and provide guidance for other personnel assisting with event.
  • Assists scorekeepers, ballfield maintenance, police and servicing personnel as needed.
  • Communicates any problems or concerns to the facilitator/supervisor.
  • Understands emergency/evacuation procedures.
  • Provides positive public relations, program promotion and policy education to participants.
  • Encourages sportsmanship.
  • Provides a friendly, upbeat and customer service-oriented environment at all times.
  • Officiates at sporting events, games, or competitions, to maintain standards of play and to ensure that game rules are observed.
  • Inspects game sites for compliance with regulations or safety requirements; assists with preparation of the game site; examines the activity environment and surface before every event to ensure safe conditions.
  • May coordinate activities of other judges, referees or umpires and scorekeepers.
  • Teaches and explain the rules and regulations governing a specific sport.
  • Prepares written reports on any disputes which are not settled to the satisfaction of all parties concerned.
  • Responds to citizens’ questions and concerns in a courteous and timely manner.
  • Performs other directly related duties consistent with the role and function of the position as assigned by management.
  • Expected to temporarily perform duties outside of normal classification in the event of a declared emergency.
  • In the event that an employee is excused from work other than being sick, they will be required to report to work in a state of declared emergency.

  • Help build confidence, skill, and community on the ice.
