About The Position

The Sports and Fitness Attendant will be responsible for overseeing members and guests as they participate in fitness and sports programs at The Kroc Center in Salem, OR. This includes ensuring the safety, cleanliness, and dedicated customer service of the fitness area, gymnasium, Rockwall, and organized sports activities. They will provide leadership of sports programs for different age groups, supervise a group of youth and/or adults engaging in an organized fitness/sport activity and promote a positive environment for children, parents and staff. The activities of the members and guests they oversee will take place in those associated spaces along with any meeting rooms and the natatorium as assigned by the Sports and Fitness Coordinator. The Sports and Fitness Attendant will also be able to use the PoS system at the fitness desk to sell members anything we offer including personal training packages. The Sports and Fitness Attendant will be trained on the Rockwall and must be able to safely Belay members climbing the Rockwall. Sports and Fitness Attendant will also complete any other assigned task as directed by the Sports and Fitness Coordinator.

Requirements

  • Effective understanding of sports and fitness principles, methods, and instruction.
  • Basic knowledge of anatomy, physiology, nutrition, and health.
  • Effective verbal and written communications skills.
  • Ability to multitask.
  • Ability to fill-in for co-workers as the work schedule requires.
  • Ability to follow directives of the designated supervisor.
  • Basic knowledge of sports & fitness equipment.
  • Ability to initiate code blue emergency call or respond to an emergency if one arises.
  • Familiarity with current Microsoft software computer programs including Word, Excel, Access, Publisher, PowerPoint, e-mail, and internet.
  • Good understanding of all fitness, weight and cardio equipment as well as their proper use and instruction.
  • Ability to interact with co-workers and the public in a positive, professional manner in conformity with The Salvation Army Mission Statement.
  • Ability to cultivate teamwork both in the sports & fitness department and the facility as a whole.
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision and in a team-setting with other professionals.
  • Ability to exercise good judgment.
  • Comfortable working with members and guests of diverse backgrounds and circumstances.
  • Must be able to lift to 25 lbs. on a regular basis, and occasionally up to 100 lbs.
  • Must be able to push, pull & move heavyweight equipment on an infrequent basis with appropriate tools and safety equipment.
  • Must be able to perform tasks of a repetitive nature without diminished performance.
  • Must be able to bend, squat, twist, and stand, as these movements are a regular requirement of this position.
  • Must be able to demonstrate appropriate form when using equipment typical of a fitness facility (cardiovascular equipment, select weights, free weights, and pulley systems).
  • Able to initiate emergency care if a situation arises and/or call 911.
  • Must pass a criminal history information check.
  • Enthusiastic, positive attitude with experience in customer service, facility cleanliness and sound judgment.
  • Current First Aid, CPR and AED certification is required.

Nice To Haves

  • Prior experience with fitness, sports, and/or recreation is desired.
  • Coaching Certification or Degree in a related Fitness and/or Sports field is helpful.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee members and guests participating in fitness and sports programs.

  • Obtain a thorough understanding of all Salvation Army and Ray and Joan Kroc Corps Community Center policies and procedures with the ability to adhere and abide by them.
  • Plan and implement sports and/or fitness programs in accordance with the vision and policies of the Salvation Army and Ray and Joan Kroc Corps Community Center.
  • Coordinate activities which are culturally relevant and developmentally appropriate.
  • Project a friendly, customer-service oriented attitude.
  • Follow Fitness Area including Rockwall Cleaning Schedule and maintain schedule.
  • Communicate with and maintain positive relationships with parents.
  • Maintain sports equipment and notify supervisor of equipment issues.
  • Provide members and guests with basic fitness equipment, orientations, and tours.
  • Sell and up-sell items offered at the fitness desk (Pre-workout, protein shake, personal training, programed classes, and more).
  • Conduct and provide a smart start test to members and guests.
  • Create and maintain an inviting and fun environment for the community at large.
  • Return all sports and/or fitness equipment to their proper storage spaces.
  • Arrive for work shift on time, prepared to work, and ready for each class session.
  • Ensure all necessary paperwork is completed.
  • Set up appointments for a trainer to provide free consultations.
  • Refer any questions, concerns, or complaints by members, guests, or staff to the Sports and Fitness Coordinator or other designated supervisor.
  • Follow all written oral communications and instructions from the Sports and Fitness Coordinator or other designated supervisors.
