About The Position

Perform daily hands-on facility operations at the Curtis D. Menard Memorial Sports Center. Supervise, lead, and instruct laborers, on-call non-regular temporary and/or volunteer employees while performing related duties. Engage in a variety of assignments under the general direction of the Sports Center Manager.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of ice resurfacing equipment and rink maintenance.
  • Knowledge in the methods and techniques used in the general maintenance and repair of buildings, grounds, and equipment.
  • Ability to make change, operate a cash register, read schedules, answer phone, and answer questions from the public.
  • Ability to multi-task in a multi-faceted sports and event center while being acute with time schedules.
  • Some knowledge of the hazards and safety practices associated with the operation of an ice arena, indoor turf field and event center.
  • Ability to operate and acquire needed certification(s) to use equipment and tools in a skilled and safe manner including but not limited to forklift, manlift, Bobcat, snowplow, and other equipment.
  • Ability to perform the various custodial tasks associated with the care and cleaning of buildings.
  • Ability to use independent judgment without direct supervision.
  • Ability to tactfully and courteously communicate and work effectively with the public of all ages, staff, patrons, volunteers, organizations and management while using problem solving skills and solving potential complications or complaints.
  • Ability to understand and execute oral and written instructions.
  • Possess all necessary licenses and certifications to perform duties and willingness to learn other applications as assigned.
  • Ability to work around event schedules, weekends, and swing shifts.
  • Home Land Security orientation tests (Incident Command Systems) will be required as a term of employment taken on-line: Entry level IS-100.b within fifteen days of date hire and IS-200.b, IS-700.a, and IS-800.b within 45 days of date of hire.
  • High school graduate, GED or equivalent.
  • Minimum of one year of experience associated with the operation of a multi-use sports complex, ice arena, event center or similar facility and two years of experience in a lead or supervisory capacity.
  • Applicable education, training, course work, seminars and/or on the job training may substitute for the one year of the required operational experience.
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license at time of application and be able to operate a motor vehicle.
  • Must provide a current (dated within 30 days of request) driving record from the state in which driver’s license is held.
  • Must obtain a valid State of Alaska Driver’s License with satisfactory driving record at time of hire.
  • Must obtain in-house or industry certifications before operating on-site equipment.

Responsibilities

  • Perform general custodial duties to include but not limited to sweeping, vacuuming, and mopping floors, emptying trash, cleaning windows and rink glass, washing walls, and cleaning restrooms.
  • Remove snow and ice from sidewalks, parking areas, and driveways by shoveling, salting, sanding, and operating a truck mounted snowplow or skid steer.
  • Prepare the ice sheet for users using a mechanically operated ice resurfacer.
  • Prepare various areas of the facility for different programming and facility uses by the public including event equipment set-up such as stage, pipe & drape, tables chairs, and audio-visual.
  • Assist in servicing and maintaining the facility, equipment and machines painting and various projects as directed.
  • Provide a safe and clean environment throughout the facility for patrons, staff and organizations.
  • Perform general grounds maintenance to include but not limited to mowing and trimming lawns, bushes, and trees.
  • Provide proper care and maintenance of indoor turf field, track, arena, meeting rooms, and all other areas of the facility while operating a variety of tools-equipment.
  • Perform basic administrative functions such as answer phones, customer interaction, customer service, and operating a Point-of-Sale system (P.O.S) with cash register.
  • Complete Open and Closing building procedures without direct supervision.
  • Provide direction and assistance to Sports Center Facility Crew Members (on-call).
  • Observe and enforce all rules and regulations of the facility and City of Wasilla policies and code.
  • Perform other job-related duties and special projects as assigned.
