About The Position

Under the direction of the Recreation Supervisor, performs various tasks as necessary to provide recreation services to the St. George Community. This is a part-time position with variable hours averaging less than 28 hours per week over a period of twelve months. The role involves customer service, facility maintenance, program support, and game supervision.

Requirements

  • Must be 17 years of age or older.
  • High school diploma or equivalent (preferred).
  • Background in umpiring/refereeing and coaching is preferred.
  • CPR, First Aid, AED certification required (must be obtained within 60 days of hire and maintained).
  • Valid driver’s license (A valid Utah Driver’s License must be obtained within 60 days of hire and maintained).
  • Working knowledge of rules and referee/umpire mechanics in a variety of sports.
  • Working knowledge of league and tournament brackets with ability to make minor changes.
  • Knowledge of park and field maintenance.
  • Basic knowledge of computers.
  • Highly motivated.
  • Dependable.
  • Customer service oriented.
  • Computer literate.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both in writing and verbally with coaches, players, and fans.
  • Ability to handle tense situations by communicating with coaches and players.
  • Ability to physically be on the court/field and support the referee/umpire in tense and sometimes emotional situations.
  • Ability to accurately write reports, including descriptions of situations, injuries, and coach/player ejections.
  • Ability to communicate with umpires on field assignments, mechanics, and field situations and report problems to the Recreation Supervisor.

Nice To Haves

  • Education in recreation or a related field.
  • Experience in defusing tense and emotional situations is a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Provide customer service in person and respond to public inquiries regarding recreation programs and services.
  • Aid in the promotion and advertising of programs and special events.
  • Copy and prepare various schedules and rosters for distribution.
  • Organize, clean, prepare, and maintain recreation facilities and other work areas.
  • Work programs and special events.
  • Open and close the recreational facility, including managing lights, rooms, gates, restrooms, and posting schedules.
  • Ensure sufficient equipment is available for each field/court and that games start on time.
  • Ensure the correct number of referees/umpires and scorekeepers are present.
  • Monitor games and the recreational facility, tracking winners and losers.
  • Enforce City rules on smoking, drinking, and safety.
  • Provide support to referees/umpires regarding problems with coaches and/or players.
  • Write incident reports for problems and/or ejections, and accident reports based on City and department policies.
  • Ensure referees and umpires write up all ejections or incidents.
  • Update scores online and at the sites.
  • Maintain brackets on a game-by-game basis in tournaments.
  • Answer questions regarding brackets, game locations, and directions to fields.
  • Settle game protests on the field for league play and form protest committees for tournaments.
  • Present awards to winning teams.
  • Take pictures of sports action and award ceremonies.
  • Turn in all game and tournament results to the Recreation Coordinator.
  • Assist in developing a comprehensive sport program, including scheduling, bracketing, organizing, publicizing, directing, and evaluating.
  • Communicate program philosophy and objectives to referees/umpires, supervisors, and the public.
  • Work as a team member to maintain/improve effectiveness and efficiency.
  • Assist in staff training, assignments, recruiting, and evaluation.
  • Perform other duties as required.
