About The Position

Under general supervision, operates and maintains a number of motorized vehicles and specialized equipment; performs maintenance functions. The employee will be responsible for a variety of tasks that may vary depending on the schedule. Flexibility is key in this role to perform a wide range of duties successfully.

Requirements

  • Completion of Grade 12 or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • A minimum of three years of related sport facility operator experience.
  • A minimum of one year of experience with an ice resurfacer is required.
  • Considerable front-line customer service experience.
  • Ability to perform essential physical functional requirements, including lifting and moving heavy equipment up to 25kgs.
  • Excellent communication skills, including the demonstrated ability to follow written and oral instructions.
  • Demonstrated diplomacy, tact, and conflict management skills.
  • Ability to deal calmly with angry or upset individuals.
  • Ability to exercise good judgment and take initiative.
  • Ability to resolve problems and participate effectively within a team.
  • Understanding of diversity and equity issues.
  • Possession of a Provincial Class "G" driver's license to operate motorized vehicles.
  • Must successfully complete a current First Aid, AED, and CPR certificate within the probationary period, and keep certifications current annually.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience maintaining sport playing surfaces is considered an asset.
  • Completion of the ORFA Ice Maintenance course is a strong asset.
  • Must have the ability to perform the essential physical functional requirements of the position, including lifting and moving heavy equipment up to 25kgs.

Responsibilities

  • Drives and operates various motorized vehicles and specialized equipment including pick-up trucks, ice flooding machines, field grooming machines, ice edging machines, snow blowers, outdoor vacuums, and golf carts.
  • Maintains sport playing surfaces such as natural grass, AstroTurf, ice surfaces, basketball courts, and volleyball courts.
  • Performs facility upkeep, identifies and troubleshoots deficiencies, and may perform minor maintenance on vehicles and equipment.
  • Sets up and maintains vehicles and sporting equipment for faculty, university, and external customer events, projecting a positive professional image.
  • Performs general maintenance duties such as shoveling snow, sweeping garbage, mopping floors, marking fields, erecting temporary fixtures, cleaning locker rooms, and painting.
  • Opens and locks designated areas, requests unauthorized personnel to leave premises, and escalates issues as required.
  • Prepares laundry for washing and operates equipment according to standard operating procedures.
  • Maintains inventory of supplies and notifies the supervisor when supplies are low.
  • Ensures equipment and materials are moved and stored in an orderly and appropriate manner, and moves furniture and equipment as needed.
  • Performs seasonal locker clean-outs, including cutting locks as directed, recording, and storing removed items.
  • Provides guidance and assistance to casual staff and others as directed.
  • Performs other related duties as required.
