About The Position

The Sponsored Award Accountant administers the financial life of an assigned portfolio of sponsored awards from establishment through closeout and holds delegated authority to certify financial reports and invoices to sponsors within the threshold set for the level.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or a related field. (TRANSCRIPT REQUIRED)
  • Two (2) years of accounting experience; OR Master’s Degree in lieu of experience; OR a combination of related education and work experience to equal six (6) years.
  • Knowledge of the Uniform Guidance, cost principles, and standard federal research terms and conditions.
  • Knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles as applied to sponsored funds.
  • Skill in financial analysis, reconciliation, and spreadsheet construction.
  • Ability to independently interpret sponsor terms and determine correct financial treatment.
  • Ability to manage a portfolio of concurrent deadlines.
  • Ability to communicate financial requirements to non-financial audiences.

Responsibilities

  • Establishes assigned awards from the award abstract and confirms accurate setup.
  • Monitors expenditures for allowability, allocability, and compliance with sponsor terms and cost principles.
  • Prepares and submits accurate financial reports in accordance with sponsor’s requirements and deadlines.
  • Reviews and certifies invoices and financial reports within the delegated authority and refers instruments requiring higher-level approval.
  • Reviews cost transfers for appropriate documentation, timeliness, and allowability and prepares them for approval.
  • Identifies and resolves financial errors, deficits, and unreconciled items.
  • Reconciles project expenditures and resolves outstanding commitments and receivables.
  • Verifies completion of final effort certification and cost share documentation.
  • Provides the transaction detail supporting reconciliation performed elsewhere in the office.
  • Advises principal investigators and departmental administrators on sponsored award financial requirements, allowability, and compliance.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
