Spirits Editor, Men’s Journal
About The Position
Men’s Journal is seeking a well-connected, highly motivated Spirits Editor to join their team on a temp-to-permanent basis. The ideal candidate will have a strong industry presence, stay updated on major news and events, and maintain robust connections with distillers, mixologists, and key industry figures. This role involves assigning and top-editing a consistent flow of daily content, ranging from new product releases to curated lists and in-depth features. The editor will be responsible for conceptualizing and executing content across digital, print, and social media platforms, including sponsored campaigns. A critical requirement is the ability to edit timely, relevant, and factually accurate copy, along with an understanding of content that resonates with the target audience.
Requirements
- 5-7 years’ experience working in a fast-paced digital environment.
- Strong connections and reputation in the spirits industry, including a breadth of knowledge among different types of spirits (e.g. whiskey, mezcal, tequila, beer, etc.).
- Proven track record of traffic growth.
- Experience writing, assigning, and top-editing spirits content, including SEO-optimized evergreens and op-eds for Discover.
- Deep knowledge of digital content best practices, plus analytical and research tools such as Google Analytics, ahrefs, etc.
- Strong knowledge of and prompt building experience in and around AI agents.
- Excellent communication, organization, leadership, and time-management skills.
- Collaborative and team-oriented.
- Bachelor’s degree in journalism or related field.
Responsibilities
- Work under the direction of the Editor-in-Chief to write, assign, and top edit spirits content with a focus on whiskey.
- Pitch, plan, and help coordinate daily, weekly, and monthly coverage—including a fall whiskey special interest publication (SIP).
- Establish and maintain editorial franchises, including Spirits and Whiskey Awards.
- Write relevant news coverage, essays, or profiles as needed.
- Brainstorm and assign Discover- and SEO-targeted stories.
- Cultivate a stable of freelance writers.
- Helm our weekly Whiskey Wednesday and Deals newsletters with a bespoke Letter From the Editor.
- Provide editorial support for burgeoning Men’s Journal Whiskey Shop and subscription model.
- Lean in on AI tools to drive day-to-day efficiencies and more.
