About The Position

The Screw Machine Set‑Up & Repair Technician is responsible for setting up, troubleshooting, repairing, and maintaining single‑spindle and multi‑spindle (Davenport) screw machines to ensure safe, efficient, and high‑quality production. This position supports manufacturing operations by minimizing downtime, optimizing machine performance, and restoring cam‑driven equipment to proper operating condition. The role requires deep mechanical expertise, strong setup capability, and the ability to work independently with minimal supervision. This is a 1st shift position.

Requirements

  • Extensive knowledge of cam‑driven screw machines (single and multi spindle), mechanical systems, and machining practices.
  • Strong mechanical aptitude with the ability to diagnose complex machine issues.
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints, mechanical drawings, and schematics.
  • Proficiency using precision measuring tools such as micrometers, indicators, and calipers.
  • Basic math skills related to machining and setup calculations.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills in English.
  • High School Diploma or GED from an accredited institution (preferred).
  • Proven hands‑on experience setting up screw machines on a wide range of jobs.

Nice To Haves

  • 5+ years of experience repairing, maintaining, or rebuilding Davenport or similar cam‑driven screw machines preferred.
  • Previous experience as a high‑level machine operator or setup technician strongly preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Perform complete set‑ups on all types of single spindle and multi spindle screw machines for a wide variety of jobs.
  • Select and adjust speeds, feeds, tooling, cams, and attachments; plan and execute proper operation sequences.
  • Support production by assisting operators with complex setup issues, machine adjustments, and quality concerns.
  • Work closely with supervision to prioritize machine setups and optimize department scheduling.
  • Responsible for quality, productivity, and repeatability of machine setups to established standards.
  • Create or support cycle time estimates as needed.
  • Diagnose and repair mechanical issues on screw machines, including spindles, carriers, slides, clutches, indexing systems, feed mechanisms, and attachments.
  • Troubleshoot hydraulic, pneumatic, and basic electrical systems related to machine operation.
  • Repair or replace worn or damaged components such as bearings, bushings, gears, cams, shafts, tooling slides, and drive components.
  • Perform emergency and planned repairs to minimize downtime and safely return machines to production.
  • Detect machine problems early, report issues to supervision, and recommend corrective actions.
  • Disassemble, inspect, repair, and reassemble screw machines or sub‑assemblies.
  • Assist with partial or complete machine rebuilds as required by production needs.
  • Restore machines to proper alignment and operating condition per manufacturer standards.
  • Identify worn or obsolete components and recommend repair or replacement options.
  • Collaborate with external service or rebuild vendors when necessary.
  • Serve as a technical resource for screw machine setup and mechanical troubleshooting expertise.
  • Provide training and mentoring to operators and other technicians as needed.
  • Participate in continuous improvement and reliability initiatives focused on legacy cam‑driven equipment.
  • Provide input on machine capability, condition, and potential improvement opportunities.
  • Maintain tooling and spare parts inventory related to screw machine operation and maintenance.
  • Document setup changes, repair work, parts usage, and machine condition.
  • Report recurring issues or reliability risks to supervision.
  • Follow all safety rules and regulations, including Lockout/Tagout requirements.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area at all times.
  • Wear required personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Follow documented work instructions and perform other duties as assigned.
