Speech Therapist - Acute Care Pediatrics - PRN
About The Position
The Speech Pathologist is a novice to an advanced beginner level of practice, particularly as it relates to a hospital-based setting. The Speech Pathologist is able to perform assessments and therapeutic interventions with the routine patient population. This position supports team endeavors by performing department and/or team tasks, problem solving and intervention skills. The Speech Pathologist may orient other allied health professionals to their field upon the successful completion of their CFY year with the approval of the Department Manager. The Speech Pathologist may also provide student experiences per approval of the Coordinator of Student Supervision.
Requirements
- License (or licensure eligible) from the Commonwealth of Virginia as a Speech and Language Pathologist
- Certificate of Clinical Competence (CCC) in SLP from American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) or Clinical Fellowship Year candidate
- Current license by the Commonwealth of Virginia as a SLP
- Current CCC in SLP.
- For CFY incumbents, completion of CFY and awarded a CCC, at conclusion of 1st year of employment
- CPR certification
- New graduate/CFY’s to SLP’s with less than two (2) years of experience
- Strong Clinical Fellowship Year candidates will be considered
- Previous clinical experience with evaluation/ treatment of neurogenic, motor speech, linguistic/cognitive communication disorders and swallowing disorders
- Previous experience performing swallow studies including MBS and bedside assessments
- Previous experience planning and executing treatment
- Master's Degree from an ASHA accredited program in Speech and Language Pathology
- Completes required learning exchange courses
Nice To Haves
- Previous experience with trach management as related to swallowing and communication disorders
- Previous experience managing complex swallowing and/or communication, linguistic/cognitive disorders
- Previous work experience in a critical care setting
- Previous experience with computer-based documentation systems.
- Clinical rotations during graduate training in medical setting
Responsibilities
- Performs assessments and therapeutic interventions with the routine patient population.
- Supports team endeavors by performing department and/or team tasks, problem solving and intervention skills.
- May orient other allied health professionals to their field upon successful completion of their CFY year with approval of the Department Manager.
- May provide student experiences per approval of the Coordinator of Student Supervision.
- Schedules frequency and intensity of therapy.
- Selects assessment instruments and administers assessment.
- Interprets results.
- Completes documentation.
- Plans and carries out treatment strategies.
- Develops long- and short-term goals.
- Performs patient/family/staff education.
- Reports at patient/family/team conferences.
- Terminates therapy when appropriate.
- May provide student supervision if deemed competent by Department Manager or Coordinator of Student Interns.
