About The Position

This position has an expected start date of March 1, 2027. Location: Fort Wayne Hospital in Fort Wayne, IN. Shift: Part Time with rotating weekend coverage; Positions will support inpatient only - intensive care units, progressive care units, and medical-surgical patients.

Requirements

• Requires a Master's Degree from an accredited academic program in speech pathology; or, if foreign trained, graduation from a speech pathology education program outside the US with educationally equivalent coursework accepted by Indiana PLA.
• Requires current license in the State of Indiana.
• Requires a certificate of clinical competence awarded by the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) or eligibility for this certificate.
• Requires Basic Life Support certification through the AHA.
• Advanced life support certifications may be required per unit/department specialty according to patient care policies.

Responsibilities

• Provides skilled speech-language pathology services to patients across the lifespan whose illness, injury, or condition impacts communication, cognitive-communication, voice, feeding, or swallowing function.
• Evaluates communication, cognitive-linguistic, voice, feeding, and swallowing performance and develops individualized plans of care that address factors affecting functional communication, safe swallowing, and participation in daily activities.
• Implements evidence-based interventions to improve communication, cognition, voice, feeding, swallowing, and overall functional independence.
• Collaborates with patients, caregivers, and the interdisciplinary care team to optimize outcomes, quality of life, and safe transitions of care.
• Supervises students and support personnel in accordance with state regulations and organizational policy.
• Participates in activities that support patient care, quality improvement, education, safety, and department operations while advancing IU Health's mission, vision, and values.
• Demonstrates IU Health’s mission, vision, and values through daily actions and decisions.
• Supports the vision of improving the health of all Hoosiers by delivering compassionate, high-quality, patient-centered care while embracing purpose, excellence, compassion, and teamwork.
• Performs speech-language pathology evaluations, assessments, treatment planning, treatment interventions, reassessments, and re-evaluations in accordance with the ASHA Scope of Practice in Speech-Language Pathology.
• Provides direct patient care to address functional limitations affecting communication, cognitive-communication, voice, feeding, swallowing, and overall participation in daily activities.
• Develops individualized plans of care with measurable goals, provides patient and caregiver education, collaborates with patients, caregivers, and the healthcare team, and identifies discharge planning needs.
• Completes accurate and timely documentation, coding, and charge capture in compliance with department, regulatory, and payer requirements.
• Initiates referrals when patient needs fall outside the scope of speech-language pathology practice.
• Maintains patient confidentiality and HIPAA compliance while demonstrating integrity, professionalism, and ethical decision-making.
• Builds trust and treats others with respect.
• Provides education to patients and families based on individual needs and evaluates understanding and effectiveness.
• Supports the development of others through mentorship, precepting, and participation in educational and professional development activities.
• Uses equipment appropriately and follows established safety practices to maintain a safe environment for patients, coworkers, and visitors.
