About The Position

The Speech Pathologist I has responsibility to evaluate, establish a plan of care, treat, and diagnose patients referred to PM&R. Daily assignments may include but are not limited to demonstrating proficiency in evaluation and treatment techniques, completing proper documentation and billing, participating in clinical education by functioning as a CI for SLP students, and potentially being assigned to other specialty areas within the PM&R department. The therapist is expected to be competent in all assigned areas and fulfill any other assigned responsibilities.

Requirements

  • Master’s degree from an accredited Speech Language Pathology program. If SLP license was received prior to 1973, then prior educational requirements/criteria will be considered.
  • Must have or be eligible to obtain a Texas State License or Intern License if completing Clinical Fellowship year.
  • Certificate of Clinical Competence in Speech Language Pathology by the American Speech Language Hearing Association must be obtained within 12 months of hire into the role.
  • Must be able to apply the theory of Speech Language Pathology under the bylaws of the Texas State Practice Act and the ASHA Code of Ethics.
  • Ability to perform technical procedures.
  • Ability to instill confidence in patients, physicians, and other staff members.
  • Close interactions with many people including but not limited to physicians, nurses, patients, professional staff and support personnel.
  • Flexibility to schedule around the afore-mentioned services if needed.
  • Ability to organize time in order to treat the maximum number of patients in the allotted working day.
  • Offer help to co-workers in the event of conflicts/cancellation in their patient load.
  • Hearing and visual activity and clear speech patterns are necessary.

Responsibilities

  • Demonstrate proficiency in the performance of evaluation and treatment techniques/skills and therapy procedures appropriate to the age of the patient and within medical limits of the patient while taking into consideration any special precautions/contraindications the patient may have.
  • Completes proper documentation and billing necessary for Speech Therapy.
  • Participate in clinical education by functioning as a CI for SLP students.
  • May be assigned to other specialty areas in PM&R department and expectation is that therapist will be competent in all assigned areas.
  • All other duties and/or assigned responsibilities.
