Requirements

  • Master's Degree in Speech-Language Pathology or Communication Disorders required.
  • Current or eligible for Certificate of Clinical Competence by the American Speech, Language and Hearing Association required.
  • Current licensure or eligible to practice professional Speech Pathology in the state where practicing required.

Nice To Haves

  • Acute or post-acute rehabilitation experience preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Supervising and participating in the application of a variety of speech and cognitive therapeutic techniques for the rehabilitation of patients.
  • Examines and evaluates patients, identifies communication/cognitive problems, including the type of problems such as cognition, dysarthria, apraxia, language, dysfluency, dysphagia, etc., the causal and/or maintaining factors, and the severity of the problems.
  • Determines whether there is some organic basis for the communication problem through examination of the patient's oral peripheral mechanism and review of the medical records.
  • Requests appropriate referrals to other services for evaluation of factors related to the communication/cognitive disorder, i.e., audiology, otolaryngology, neurology, or other disciplines as needed.
  • Evaluates the need for prosthetic appliances to aid or facilitate the patient's treatment and development of communication skills such as communication boards, electronic devices, and other necessary equipment.
  • Provides for the safety of patients, visitors, staff, and self when interacting with patients who may have behavioral outbursts, which can include yelling, exiting, hitting, kicking, biting, spitting, scratching, and throwing objects.
  • Performs toilet and chair transfers without assistance for patients up to 150 pounds utilizing approved transfer techniques. Transfer techniques include standing, walking, stooping, bending, kneeling, squatting, lifting, carrying, pushing and pulling. Patients requiring moderate to maximum assistance and weighing over 150 pounds are lifted and/or transferred by two persons.
