ARU SLPs at GW Hospital provide adult patients admitted to the ARU with a full range of diagnostic and treatment modalities within the scope of practice, including Clinical Swallow Evaluation (CSE), Modified Barium Swallow Study (MBSS), Flexible Endoscopic Evaluation of Swallowing (FEES), formal speech-language and cognitive assessments, speaking valve assessments, and post-op care for total laryngectomy patients. SLPs are expected to collaborate closely with the interdisciplinary care team, including physicians, advanced practice providers, nurses, OTs, PTs, and case management, participating in formal team conference meetings several times per week. The ARU serves unique patient populations including Stroke, Trauma (including SCI), LVAD, Organ Transplant, Trach, and Head and Neck Cancer patients, and utilizes equipment such as the Rehab Gym and Dining Room, BITS Board, and IOPI.

Requirements

Master’s degree in Speech-Language Pathology
Minimum 1-year post-graduation experience Inpatient Rehab or Acute Care
Independent in performing MBSS
Independent with speaking valve assessment and treatment for trach patients weaned from vent
Must have their DC License before start of employment
Will not consider CFs

Nice To Haves

Independent in performing FEES preferred

Responsibilities

Provide the full range of diagnostic and treatment modalities in the SLP’s scope of practice for adult patients admitted to the ARU.
Conduct Clinical Swallow Evaluations (CSE), Modified Barium Swallow Studies (MBSS), and Flexible Endoscopic Evaluations of Swallowing (FEES).
Perform formal speech-language and cognitive assessments.
Conduct speaking valve assessments.
Provide post-op care for total laryngectomy patients.
Collaborate closely with the entire interdisciplinary care team, especially Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation physicians and advanced practice providers, Rehab nurses, OTs, PTs, and case management.
Participate in formal, in-person team conference meetings several times per week to discuss each patient’s plan of care and progress.
