About The Position

Vanderbilt University Medical Center (VUMC) is seeking a Speech-Language Pathologist (SLP) to join their Adult Acute Care team at Vanderbilt University Hospital. This position is located in Nashville, Tennessee, and involves working in a Level 1 Trauma Center across multiple ICUs and step-down units. The role focuses on providing care to medically complex patients, evaluating and treating disorders related to speech, language, voice, cognition, fluency, auditory rehabilitation, and swallowing/oral feeding. The SLP will also educate and counsel patients and families, provide independent therapeutic services, identify areas of clinical specialization, supervise graduate students, and participate in quality improvement activities. Requirements

  • Master’s Degree in Speech-Language Pathology from an accredited program
  • ASHA Certificate of Clinical Competence (CCC-SLP) – Required
  • Tennessee SLP Licensure or eligibility
  • Completion of Clinical Fellowship (CF)
  • Relevant Work Experience
  • 1 year experience
  • LIC-Speech Pathologist - Tennessee

Nice To Haves

  • Prior experience in a Level I adult acute care hospital
  • Demonstrated ability to manage high-acuity, medically complex adult patients independently
  • Experience working in ICU and acute medical/surgical units
  • Confidence functioning as a key SLP resource within an interdisciplinary team

Responsibilities

  • Evaluates and treats adult patients with swallowing, speech, language, cognitive-communication, and voice disorders.
  • Performs Modified Barium Swallow Studies (MBSS/VFSS) and Flexible Endoscopic Evaluation of Swallowing (FEES).
  • Collaborates with physicians, nurses, dietitians, OTs, PTs, and other specialists.
  • Documents patient progress in compliance with hospital and regulatory standards.
  • Mentors graduate students and clinical fellows in a teaching hospital environment.
  • Analyzes comprehensive information from formal and informal assessment that is pertinent to the patient's care and management to determine a rehabilitation treatment diagnosis.
  • Collaborates with stakeholders in establishing the plan of care, coordinates and implements care delivery while anticipating patient care needs across the rehabilitation continuum.
  • Applies appropriate, evidence-based interventions to ensure effective outcomes and re-evaluates performance to assess patient's progress towards goals.
  • Employs strategies to promote successful return to home, community, and school/vocational environments.
  • Supervises graduate students by providing instruction, guidance/counsel and training to ensure provision of competent patient care and completion of appropriate documentation.
