About The Position

The Speech Language Pathologist (SLP) is responsible for delivering quality care to patients by assessing, diagnosing, treating, and helping to prevent communication and swallowing disorders. This role involves working with patients to develop and strengthen swallowing muscles to prevent choking, under the supervision of the Clinical Director. The position requires the SLP to work at Terrell State Hospital, a mental health facility, with patients who may have a dual diagnosis. The SLP must adhere to the rules, regulations, and policies of HHSC and Terrell State Hospital, as well as the staffing agency and TSH’s attendance and leave policy. Compliance with HHSC immunization requirements, COVID-19 testing with a negative result, and providing a COVID-19 Vaccination Card (if applicable) are necessary. The SLP must also submit to HHSC required drug tests, fingerprinting, and background checks, and complete all facility and HHSC required training.

Requirements

• Master’s Degree in Speech Language Pathology.
• Current and unrestricted license to practice Speech Language Pathology with the State of Texas through TDLR.
• Current CPR/BCLS certification.
• Educated and compliant with all HIPPA regulations; maintains strict client confidentiality.
• Must be willing to work at Terrell State Hospital, a mental health facility with patients that may have a dual diagnosis.
• Must abide by the rules, regulations, and policies of HHSC and Terrell State Hospital.
• Must abide by staffing agency and TSH’s attendance and leave policy.
• Must comply with HHSC immunization requirements.
• COVID-19 testing with negative result required.
• COVID-19 Vaccination Card, if applicable.
• Must submit to HHSC required drug test.
• Must submit to HHSC required fingerprinting and background check.
• Must complete facility and HHSC required training.
• Must be certified by the American Heart Association –BLS in cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and maintain that certification while providing services at the Terrell State Hospital.
• Copies of CPR certifications must be kept on file with TSH’s Contracting office.
• All certifications must be current and remain as such while providing services at the Terrell State Hospital.

Responsibilities

• Swallowing assessment includes accurate history taking, examination, direct patient observation, and collaboration with a treatment team/attending physician leading to the establishment of a diagnosis and treatment plan.
• Performs periodic re-evaluation of the patient as necessary and makes adjustments in the patient’s treatment plan as needed in accordance with physician goals and orders.
• Documentation in patient’s medical record is clear, concise, and identifies target symptoms.
• Frequency of documentation is appropriate to level of care patient required and addresses referrals as appropriate to internal departments and referrals to outside providers.
• Compliance with HHSC and facility documentation timeframe requirements.
• Provides and monitors facility Standard Operating Procedures to meet standards for compliance with accrediting agencies; specifically Joint Commission guidelines, CMS Standards, TSH Policy and Directives and HHSC Standards, Rules and Directives.
