About The Position

This position supports Mercy's philosophy of patient centered care by providing high quality and up to date diagnosis, remediation, and consultative services to those patients demonstrating changes in their speech, language or swallow functions. These services will be given in a manner to help patients return to the highest level of function within their abilities.

Requirements

  • Demonstrate ability to function without close supervision.
  • Demonstrate good written and verbal skills.
  • Demonstrate ability to perform duties in a variety of settings sometimes with little advance notice.
  • Knowledge of computers and medical terminology required.
  • Education sufficient to obtain required licensure.
  • Iowa state licensure or temporary licensure is required at time of hire.
  • If hired with temporary licensure, permanent Iowa licensure must be obtained within a time frame commensurate with FTE status (12 months for 1.0 FTE, 18 months for 0.5 FTE, etc.), not to exceed 24 months.
  • Current certification in Basic Life Support, in accordance with the American Heart Association required.
  • Iowa Dependent Adult Abuse/Iowa Child Abuse Mandatory Reporter training required.
  • Employee must submit certification of completed training to Human Resources prior to start or transfer date.

Responsibilities

  • Provide speech-language and swallowing services to patients ensuring quality of care as evidenced in the clinical record.
  • Coordinate patient care with other team members ensuring optimal patient care and communication as evidenced in the clinical record.
  • Complete all required paperwork following policies and procedures to ensure that documentation reflects care provided and the outcomes achieved as evidenced in the clinical record.
  • Maintain and enhance personal knowledge as well as promoting professional standards in speech-language pathology.
  • Attend all required safety training and can describe his or her responsibilities related to general safety, department/service safety, and specific job-related hazards.
  • Follow Exposure Control Plans/Bloodborne and Airborne Pathogens.
  • Demonstrate respect and regard for the dignity of all patients, families, visitors, and fellow employees to ensure a professional, responsible, and courteous environment.
  • Promote effective working relations and works effectively as part of a team inter- and intra-departmentally to facilitate the department's ability to meet its goals and objectives.
  • Provide diagnosis, remediation, and consultative speech, language and swallowing services to a case-load of patients.
  • Utilize current technology, equipment and techniques to provide the above services.
  • Supervise students as needed.
  • Follows Mercy's safety guidelines, carries out job-specific safety duties and responsibilities, and promptly reports any unsafe conditions, situations, incidents and injuries.
