As a Speech Therapist, the primary goal is to enhance patient independence by facilitating safe eating and drinking, addressing memory and cognitive challenges, and improving communication. The role involves collaborating with physicians, therapists, and other healthcare professionals. Key duties include performing modified barium swallow studies to assess and ensure safe swallowing for patients, particularly those recovering from trauma, thereby alleviating hunger and providing comfort to patients and their families. Additionally, the therapist conducts cognitive evaluations to determine a patient's capacity for decision-making and to identify communication issues stemming from cognitive or speech impairments. The ideal candidate is characterized by flexibility, calmness, compassion, curiosity, adaptability, and a strong dedication to improving patient safety, independence, and overall quality of life.

Requirements

  • Masters Other Speech & Language Pathology, upon hire
  • Speech Language Pathologist: AR, upon hire
  • Basic Life Support - CPR, upon hire

Responsibilities

  • Perform modified barium swallow studies to determine a patient’s ability to swallow safely
  • Perform cognitive assessments to determine a patient’s ability to make decisions for themselves, remember basic information, control their emotions and interact appropriately with others.
  • Document all assessment results and work with physicians and other clinicians to develop a plan of care and track all treatments and patient progress.
  • Using exercises, modalities, and/or adaptive devices, work with patients to improve speech, memory, cognition, etc.
  • Educate the patient and families on these processes so they can make the best decisions for the patient.
  • Consistently deliver the highest quality care to every patient.
