About The Position

Keewaytinook Okimakanak (KO) is seeking a full-time Speech Language Pathologist (SLP) to serve its KO communities. The SLP will be based out of Thunder Bay, Dryden, or Balmertown. Responsibilities include providing clinical services such as assessments, consultation, programming, individual and/or group sessions, education, and referrals as part of the KO and community Child First Team. This role serves children from birth to 18 years of age with developmental delays or disabilities living in KO communities. The SLP will travel to KO communities for one week, four times a year, and will utilize telemedicine for follow-up, consultation, teaching, and reassessment when not in the communities.

Requirements

  • Master’s degree in Speech Language Pathology.
  • Registered and a member in good standing with the College of Audiologists and Speech Language Pathologists of Ontario.
  • Must be sensitive to the cultural traditions of the Keewaytinook Okimakanak people.
  • Experience working with First Nation communities.
  • Proven leadership abilities, including accountability, and work-habits.
  • Experience and skills working in a political environment.
  • Experience in collecting and reporting statistics.
  • Knowledge of the complex multi-layered structure of health and social programs targeted to children with developmental delays or disabilities and their families.
  • Effective decision making and leadership qualities.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Demonstration and oral presentation abilities.
  • Current valid Criminal Record Check.
  • A valid driver's license.

Responsibilities

  • Provides clinical assessment of speech and language functions of children from birth to age 18.
  • Develops and delivers interventions that address identified needs, including administration of diagnostic tests and interpretation of results, transmission of assessment information to families, program modifications, decision-making regarding treatment initiation/duration/termination, and service coordination for children with multiple needs.
  • Provides direct intervention on an individual or group basis for children.
  • Provides recommendations for individualized speech and language programs for children.
  • Provides consultation, education, and counseling to parents/legal guardians and educators on pertinent speech and language topics.
  • Supervises the work of supportive personnel, developing speech/language goals and monitoring progress.
  • Plans, develops, and provides information, education, and consultation on preschool speech and language issues to community organizations.
  • Consults, collaborates, and coordinates services with relevant agencies and professionals.
  • Maintains up-to-date recordings and administrative requirements, including workload measurements data, in accordance with KO policy.
  • Works with communities to identify and evaluate risks to programs and assist in implementing measures to control and minimize risks.
  • Maintains confidentiality, respects and safeguards client rights, autonomy, dignity, and well-being.
  • Ensures clients have opportunities to express concerns and encourages feedback.
  • Promotes education and continuous learning, participates in educational opportunities, and shares knowledge with colleagues.
  • Participates in continuous quality improvement activities and identifies capacity strengthening needs for communities.
  • Keeps accurate and timely records and reports observations.
  • Reports incidents, accidents, and unusual activity immediately.
  • Participates in and accepts supervision/feedback from the Jordan's Principle Coordinator and the Health Director.
  • Accepts other duties as may be assigned.
