ABOUT THE CALIFORNIA VIRTUAL ACADEMIES The California Virtual Academies (a network of 9 public charter schools) delivers online/virtual home based instruction to students in grades TK-12 in California. While our schools do offer some scheduling flexibility, students are required to complete approximately 4-6 hours of coursework daily, complete all assignments, and attend required live instructional sessions. K12, inc. is our curriculum provider. Speech therapy sessions are conducted online, using a HIPAA compliant video conferencing platform. Learning Coaches are required to be present for all virtual therapy sessions. Summary: As a Speech Language Pathologist Assistant (SLPA), you will work directly for the K12 Powered Online Schools, including the nine independent California Virtual Academies, the Insight Schools of California, and the iQ Academy California-Los Angeles. You will work under the direct supervision of the Director of Student Support Services and a licensed speech-language pathologist. Virtual schools are new models in public education. They look both backward to what we know works well in educating children, and forward to see how technology can help us implement these strategies with children. Virtual school teachers are part of a pioneering effort. Our staff, therefore, need to share the School’s pioneering mission and approach.

Requirements

  • Permanent California Residence (Must currently reside in 1 of the 42 California counties we service/hire in)
  • Speech-Language Pathology Assistant License issued by the Speech-Language Pathology, Audiology and Hearing Aid Dispensers Board
  • Reside in the state of California
  • An associate degree in an SLPA program or a bachelor’s degree in a speech-language pathology or communication disorders program
  • Successful completing of a minimum of one hundred (100) hours of supervised field work experience or its clinical experience equivalent
  • Demonstration of competency in the skills required of an SLPA
  • Strong content and subject-matter knowledge
  • Ability to support and guide adults, as well as students
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Organization and time-management skills
  • Excellent writing and grammar skills
  • Proficiency in MS Excel, MS Word, and Outlook, PowerPoint and experience using them in a professional capacity
  • Services are generally conducted online, using a HIPAA compliant video conferencing platform, such as zoom. Learning coaches are required to be present for all virtual therapy sessions.
  • Registered SLPA with the SPEECH-LANGUAGE PATHOLOGY & AUDIOLOGY & HEARING AID DISPENSERS BOARD

Responsibilities

  • You will provide treatment for students, grades K-12 who exhibit a full range of communication disorders, including articulation and phonological disorders, fluency disorders, voice disorders, and expressive, receptive, and social-pragmatic language disorders. Utilizes assessment tools with a variety of techniques that are functional and based on the reason for referral. (e.g., standardized, curriculum-based, portfolio, and authentic assessments in accordance with child find laws)
  • You may also work directly with students who utilize alternative forms of communication, including AAC and sign language
  • Makes recommendations to the IEP team based on the findings of each assessment and specific to the identified disability as it relates to the core curriculum and the District’s Content and Performance Standards
  • You will assist in maintaining student records, collect data on goals, and prepare materials for your students and families to utilize during virtual therapy sessions and at home
  • You will be required to schedule speech therapy sessions with your students’ families
  • You will support students within the general education setting, as well as students within the general education setting with special education support services
  • You will provide services as specified on your students’ Individual Education Plans (IEP). You will complete all required documentation, including case logs and progress reports
  • Other duties as assigned
