About The Position

Great Prairie Area Education Agency has an opening for a Speech-Language Assistant / Evaluation Assistant. This is a 181-Day Contract position with 7-hour days, beginning with the 2026-2027 school year. The position will serve Region 3, which includes Cardinal, Davis County, Moulton-Udell, Ottumwa, Ottumwa Christian, and Seton Catholic schools. The Speech-Language Assistant provides articulation, language, voice, and fluency services to students under the direction of an assigned Speech-Language Pathologist. The Evaluation Assistant conducts student screening and assessment activities under the supervision of a designated certificated employee, such as a School Psychologist, and may support virtual certified employees. This role involves data collection, administering and scoring tests, observing students, assisting with screening and progress monitoring, and maintaining confidentiality.

Requirements

  • At least 18 years of age.
  • Hold a high school diploma or its equivalent.
  • Experience or capacity to demonstrate positive interpersonal skills.
  • Experience or capacity to demonstrate cooperative teamwork.
  • Experience or capacity to demonstrate excellent written and verbal communication.
  • Ability to travel between schools/sites served.
  • Proficient with computer use for tasks like scoring selected tests, completing word processing activities, and entering data into a spreadsheet, graphing data in Excel.
  • Ability to use and integrate technology appropriately in daily work which includes, but is not limited to, efficient operation of telephone and voice mail systems, application of basic computer skills to effectively use e-mail, internet and word processing, effective use of Zoom, and the ability to use Google applications.
  • Ability to handle information in a confidential manner.
  • Ability to prioritize and coordinate multiple tasks.
  • Ability to convey a positive and professional image to students, families and colleagues.

Responsibilities

  • Implements speech-language activities as directed by the Speech-Language Pathologist.
  • Identifies and records correct/incorrect student responses.
  • Maintain communication with assigned Speech-Language Pathologist on an ongoing basis.
  • Assists Speech-Language Pathologist in material preparation.
  • Participates in parent/teacher conferences or staffings as requested by the Speech-Language Pathologist.
  • Maintains confidentiality of all student information.
  • Maintains data required for use in local school district (LEA), AEA, state and federal reporting.
  • Assumes such other duties and responsibilities as may be assigned by the assigned Speech-Language Pathologist and the Regional Special Education Director.
  • Participate in staff development opportunities as requested by the assigned Speech-Language Pathologist and the Regional Director.
  • Conduct student screening and assessment activities under the supervision of a designated certificated employee.
  • Provide screening and assessment activities for all members of the core team(s).
  • Collect data from existing LEA and AEA records.
  • Administer and score individual tests and academic probes, which will be interpreted by the appropriate certified AEA staff member.
  • Observe students in classrooms and other settings to collect anecdotal and systematic information about specific target behaviors and environmental events.
  • Assist in screening activities as assigned.
  • Assist with the observation, collection of data and the graphing of progress monitoring information.
  • Assist with data collection related to research, agency accreditation plans and general supervision.
  • Provide student information to core team members in a timely fashion.
  • Assume such other duties and responsibilities as may be assigned by the Administrator and/or Supervisor.
  • Participate in projects, committees, meetings or activities to support the mission of the Agency.
  • Participate in staff development and professional growth activities.
  • Develop and maintain proper and adequate records and documentation in accordance with federal and state rules and regulations and Agency policies and procedures.
