About The Position

The Kansas City, Kansas Public Schools (KCKPS) is seeking a Speech and Language Pathologist to identify students with communication disabilities, plan and implement appropriate treatment to minimize adverse impacts on student success, recommend treatment plans, and provide direction to Speech Language Pathology Assistants. KCKPS is a large, nationally recognized urban school district serving approximately 22,000 students with diverse linguistic backgrounds.

Requirements

  • Master's Degree
  • Valid Kansas Speech Language Pathology license.
  • Reliable transportation required given the position may require travel to service student needs.
  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.
  • Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
  • Ability to read and analyze and interpret general professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations.
  • Ability to write reports, general curriculum and learning theories, correspondence, and protocols.
  • Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of administrators, staff, parents, students, and the general public.
  • Ability to apply knowledge of current research and theory to instructional program; ability to plan and implement lessons based on division and school objectives and the needs and abilities of students.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, peers, parents and community; ability to speak clearly and concisely in written or oral communication.

Responsibilities

  • Assesses students' communication skills for the purpose of identifying communication disorders, determining program eligibility and developing recommendations for treatment.
  • Collaborates with a variety of groups and/or individuals for the purpose of communicating information, resolving issues and providing services in compliance with established guidelines.
  • Coordinates meetings and processes for eligible students for the purpose of presenting evaluation results, developing treatment plans, and/or providing training to parents/students/staff.
  • Develops treatment plans, interventions and/or educational materials for the purpose of minimizing the adverse impact of communication disorders in compliance with state and federal regulations.
  • Instructs eligible students in the use of appropriate communication technologies for the purpose of minimizing the adverse educational impact of communication disorders in accordance with established guidelines and legal requirements.
  • Instructs assigned support staff for the purpose of providing information on communicative disorders, use of assistive devices and feeding techniques and/or implementing prescribed treatment plans.
  • Interprets medical reports within the scope of Speech/Language Pathologist's experience and goals for the purpose of providing information and/or ensuring that treatment/intervention plans are appropriate.
  • Maintains files and/or records for the purpose of ensuring the availability of information as required for reference and/or compliance.
  • Participates in meetings, workshops, and seminars for the purpose of conveying and/or gathering information.
  • Prepares a wide variety of written materials for the purpose of documenting activities, providing written reference, and/or conveying information.
  • Provides speech and language therapy to students for the purpose of minimizing the adverse impact of speech and language disorders on student success.
  • Researches resources and methods for the purpose of determining the appropriate evidenced based approach to students' needs.
  • Responds to inquiries for the purpose of providing information and/or referral as appropriate.
  • Transports supplies and equipment to a variety of sites for the purpose of ensuring the availability of items as needed.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned for the purpose of ensuring the efficient and effective functioning of the work unit.
