This role involves receiving, sorting, identifying, processing, and distributing specimens to all technical sections. The Specimen Processor will also enter requisition information and patient results into the computer system, call statistical results, answer phones, code charge slips, train new employees, and perform related clerical duties. A service-oriented approach, courtesy, respect, enthusiasm, and a positive attitude are expected. The role requires initiative and a willingness to assist in completing departmental tasks. Responsibilities include monitoring pneumatic tube and courier deliveries for timely specimen processing, investigating and resolving requesting mistakes or other specimen problems, and completing quality forms for unacceptable specimens or errors. The processor will separate specimens by centrifugation, label aliquot tubes, transfer samples as defined by policy, and store samples at the appropriate temperature. They will also determine and enter specimen receive times, answer telephone inquiries regarding specimen collection, results, and normal ranges, and adhere to health and safety regulations for handling biohazardous materials. Verification of patient specimens against requisitions, preparation and packaging of specimens for outside locations, sorting and prioritizing specimens, and notifying supervisors of issues are also key duties. The role includes disinfecting the work area and participating in the orientation and training of new employees.
