About The Position

A Specimen Processor I prepares and handles specimens received for testing. This role works under the direct supervision of a trained employee or supervisor who is proficient in all relative procedures and processes pertaining to accessioning and other assigned tasks. The Specimen Processor I is responsible for preparing and handling specimens for testing, assigning internal tracking numbers (accession IDs), verifying specimen identifiers against test orders, ensuring proper specimen labeling, scanning and filing paperwork, and transporting specimens to testing labs. The position also involves maintaining competency in laboratory policies and procedures, adhering to compliance and regulatory requirements (especially data security and patient confidentiality), upholding ethical standards, meeting productivity and quality standards, and collaborating with team members to resolve problems and implement improvements.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent required
  • Basic computer knowledge needed
  • Excellent organizational, communication, multitasking, and teamwork skills
  • Detail oriented with the ability to multitask

  • Data entry experience preferred

Responsibilities

  • Prepares and handles specimens for testing
  • Assigns specimens an internal tracking number (accession ID)
  • Compares and verifies identifiers on specimens match the test order
  • Ensures specimens are labeled appropriately
  • Scans, files, and electronically saves paperwork received with specimens
  • Transports specimens to testing labs
  • Performs other duties as assigned
  • Maintains competency in all assigned laboratory policies and procedures
  • Observes all compliance and regulatory requirements, particularly those associated to data security and patient confidentiality
  • Maintains ethical standards in the performance of testing and in interactions with co-workers and other staff
  • Meets productivity and quality standards/rates set by the department and lab operations
  • Works with team members to resolve department problems and help implement improvement projects
