About The Position

IWK Health is an academic health sciences centre providing tertiary and primary care for children, youth, adults, and families across the Atlantic region. The Specialty Technologist - Mammography, under the general supervision of the Breast Screening supervisor and Diagnostic Imaging manager, is responsible for the operation of radiological and accessory equipment for mammography within the Diagnostic Imaging/ Mammography, Breast Screening Multiple Sites and IWK Diagnostic Sites. The technologist must be able to perform quality screening and diagnostic mammography with minimal supervision and display independent judgment, ingenuity and initiative. Performing radiological procedures for the purpose of medical diagnosis including: assessing requisitions for appropriate examinations, views and equipment required; obtaining pertinent history; selecting techniques and positioning patients to attain quality images; operating X-Ray equipment and adhering to ALARA radiation safety practices; carrying out sterile techniques when required; and performing clerical duties related to the care of the patient.

Requirements

  • Graduate of an approved school of Radiological Technology required.
  • Current registration or eligible for registration with the Nova Scotia College of Medical Imaging and Radiation Therapy Professionals (NSCMIRTP) is required
  • Current registration or eligible for registration with the Canadian Association of Medical Radiation Technologists (CAMRT) required.
  • Current successful completion of a Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada Basic Life Support (BLS) program within the last 12 months or successful completion of a BLS Renewal Challenge Certificate is required.
  • Demonstrated ability to make independent technical decisions and work as part of an interdisciplinary team, required
  • A high degree of mental and visual acuity, as well as reasonable manual dexterity is required
  • Must be willing to obtain continuing education as part of CAR Mammography Accreditation
  • Demonstrated excellent communication and interpersonal skills required

Nice To Haves

  • Mammography experience preferred
  • Competencies in other languages an asset.
