The Specialty Rx Prior Authorization/Patient Assistance Specialist serves as a key liaison between patients, providers, pharmacy teams, and insurance payers to ensure timely medication access. This role is responsible for completing prior authorizations, securing financial assistance, and supporting pharmacy operations to improve patient outcomes and reduce financial barriers to care.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • 2–4 years of related experience through an equivalent combination of education and experience OR 4–5 years of related experience
  • PTCB certification or equivalent
  • Tennessee State Board of Pharmacy Registration
  • Strong organization, analytical, and follow-up skills
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Strong problem-solving skills
  • Ability to organize and prioritize work assignments
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment
  • Ability to operate computers, scanners, and related equipment
  • Basic mathematics skills
  • Ability to work independently and efficiently
  • Ability to analyze situations and respond in a timely manner
  • Ability to work in multi-functional teams
  • Strong interpersonal skills and emotional intelligence
  • Ability to build and maintain effective working relationships within West Cancer Center
  • Proficiency in computer applications including word processing and email

Responsibilities

  • Communicate with patients, physicians, nurses, reimbursement representatives, and insurance payers to complete prior authorizations and secure patient assistance
  • Serve as a liaison between medical partners and pharmacy for implementation of Rx benefits
  • Support patients with access and affordability to ensure timely medication delivery
  • Complete prior authorizations, benefit verifications, and EMR documentation
  • Provide high-quality customer service to patients and staff
  • Develop and maintain relationships with clinic staff, physicians, and pharmacy contacts
  • Understand prescription drug benefits and adjudication processes
  • Provide consultation and support to improve patient services and prescription capture rates
  • Research financial assistance options including copay cards, foundations, and assistance programs
  • Identify and implement process improvements to enhance customer experience
  • Assist pharmacists and pharmacy staff with administrative duties as needed (claims processing, inventory tracking, audits, filing)
  • Provide backup support for pharmacy operations when needed
  • Perform other duties as assigned
