The Specialty Certified Medical Assistant plays a crucial role in assisting physicians in daily activities within the Dermatology department. This includes preparing patients for examinations, assisting with procedures like Mohs surgery, performing phlebotomy and injections, aiding providers in medication and order entry, scheduling diagnostic tests, and managing patient communications.

Requirements

  • Graduation from an accredited Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) program required.
  • Successful completion of annual mandatory education requirements.
  • Three to five years previous experience in a clinical nursing unit with preference in Surgical Services or in-patient/out-patient surgery.
  • Current valid Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) License, valid compact multi-state license, or a temporary permit while awaiting licensure required for work state.
  • Strong interpersonal skills necessary to effectively communicate and interact with patients, family members, hospital personnel, and co-workers.
  • Ability to multi-task and prioritize work assignments.
  • Ability to learn, retain, and utilize computer skills required for department and hospital information systems.
  • Ability to problem-solve.
  • Ability to demonstrate attention to detail, assessment skills, knowledge of basic sterile technique, utilization of an automated external defibrillator (AED) and perform.
  • Willingness to learn all principles of infection control.

Nice To Haves

  • Certification(s) in area of specialty preferred.
  • Current American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS) strongly preferred at time of hire, required within 3 months of hire.

Responsibilities

  • Provides appropriate care specific to the age of the customer/patient, ensuring understanding and comfort level of treatment.
  • Performs an initial and ongoing assessment to determine patient needs, including data from the patient/significant other(s) and prioritizing data collection.
  • Prepares patients for physician exams by assessing symptoms, weighing patients, checking vital signs, obtaining relevant information, documenting procedures, and reviewing medical records.
  • Develops/reviews/revises and individualizes the plan of care to address patient nursing care needs, collaborating with providers and other clinical disciplines.
  • Provides patient and family education regarding medication use, medical equipment, and health/illness prevention.
  • Implements interventions consistent with the established plan of care in a safe and appropriate manner, following nursing protocols and standards of care.
  • Performs technical skills competently and independently, including administering medications by injection, inhalation, oral, or intravenous methods.
  • Performs diagnostic testing under the direction of physicians.
  • Starts, maintains, and discontinues Intravenous (IV) infusions.
  • Performs phlebotomy to obtain specimens according to standardized procedures.
  • Maintains professional behavior in attitude, demeanor, and interactions to achieve the organization's mission.
  • Communicates effectively to solve problems at the personal and unit level.
  • Is approachable and professional in working with other health professionals, ancillary staff, patients, and families.
  • Takes pride in the unit by active participation in restocking and maintaining a clean environment.
  • Maintains a professional appearance, behavior, and work environment.
  • Maintains competence in the area of experience.
  • Participates in meetings and/or committees as needed.
  • Greets, directs, and assists patients to ensure proper care in a prompt and polite manner.
  • Initiates action to correct, prevent, and/or minimize risks to the patient, family, or staff/employees.
  • Completes appropriate report forms for risks (e.g., variance/incident report, patient concern report, maintenance request).
  • Communicates to appropriate personnel regarding unresolved issues.
  • Works within the scope of practice as defined by the Nurse Practice Act.
  • Provides appropriate follow-up care to coordinate patient needs by following department-specific guidelines.
  • Maintains work areas to ensure healthy environmental conditions by cleaning and organizing equipment and rooms.
  • Assists the physician with various procedures by preparing and monitoring the patient, readying supplies, medications, equipment, and assisting according to physician instructions.
