This course introduces students to the technologies currently being used in legal practice and examines how they are transforming legal research, drafting, document review, contract analysis, due diligence, litigation preparation, legal operations, and client service. Students will learn the basic concepts behind artificial intelligence, generative AI, document automation, and workflow tools, with an emphasis on how these technologies are used by lawyers and legal organizations. Students will also consider the limits and risks of these tools, including accuracy, confidentiality, privilege, professional responsibility, and the continuing need for human legal judgment. Through hands-on exercises, demonstrations, and applied assignments, students will evaluate legal technology products, use AI-assisted tools for common legal tasks, and design technology-enabled approaches to recurring legal problems. The course will expose students to both routine legal task automation and more sophisticated uses of AI in legal analysis and decision support. By the end of the course, students will have a practical understanding of how legal technologies work, how to assess their usefulness and risks, and how to use them responsibly in Canadian legal practice.
