About The Position

Characterize fluid, rock, and material samples using advanced analytical techniques with a focus on gas chromatography-based instrumentation.

Requirements

  • B.S. or M.S. degree in chemistry, geochemistry, biochemistry, or related field with an emphasis on analytical separation
  • Hands-on experience operating GC systems with different detectors such as FID, TCD, MS, VUV, and chemiluminescence, including analyses, data processing and instrument maintenance
  • Attention to detail and the ability to follow proper lab procedures and uphold good housekeeping practices in lab
  • Willingness to be involved in research that is highly exploratory in nature and may support programs within division and affiliate organizations
  • Good communication skills for understanding and describing scientific observations, experimental plans and results, equipment and material design concepts
  • Ability to quickly learn new tasks and integrate them into workflows
  • Organized, punctual, and takes full responsibility for laboratory procedural compliance and safe laboratory operations including equipment maintenance, chemical and supply ordering, chemical inventory, safe handling and disposal of hazardous chemicals
  • Effective in a team working environment, enjoys challenges, and committed to lifelong learning
  • Strictly adhere to SOPs for different methods and workflows
  • Comfortable and confident in working with solvents and chemicals
  • Experience with working in analytical lab environment

Nice To Haves

  • Expertise in Agilent GC systems with various detectors and Agilent data acquisition and processing software
  • Experience with other chromatography techniques including GPC, LC, LC×LC, Supercritical Fluid, or GC×GC
  • Experience with advanced characterization techniques including FTIR, NMR or MS

Responsibilities

  • Support research programs involving the molecular characterization of complex mixtures using primarily gas chromatography (GC) methods
  • Provide sample analysis including, but is not limited to, sediment and source rock extracts, crude oils, and refined products
  • Perform routine calibration, cleaning, and maintenance of instrumentation
  • Follow laboratory safety procedures, chemical hygiene plans and PPE requirements
  • Comply with quality management systems (e.g., ISO, GLP, internal QC standards)
