This role follows a hybrid schedule and requires in-office presence in Columbus, Ohio two days per week. Candidates must be based within a commutable distance to Columbus, Ohio. This role does not qualify for employer-sponsored work authorization. Nationwide does not participate in the STEM OPT Extension program. As a Software Engineer, you will focus primarily on providing high quality, efficient technology solutions to business partners by crafting new software applications or modifying and/or supporting existing packaged or custom-built applications. In this capacity, you’ll analyze, code, configure, test, debug, document and maintain applications. You will apply secure software and systems engineering practices throughout the delivery lifecycle to ensure our data and technology solutions are protected from threats and vulnerabilities. You will use DevSecOps practices, tooling and techniques. You will drive continuous improvement and learning through ongoing training, practice and innovation. You will manage medium to large project priorities, deadlines and deliverables proactively.

Requirements

  • Solid understanding of Personal Lines insurance products and workflows, particularly in product pricing functionality.
  • Strong knowledge of software testing principles and Agile/Scrum frameworks.
  • Experience with test management and defect tracking tools (e.g., JIRA, Spira).
  • Experience developing and maintaining automated test scripts using tools such as Ruby and/or Tosca.
  • Understanding of API, UI, integration, and backend data testing.
  • Familiarity with CI/CD pipelines and automated testing best practices.
  • Strong analytical, troubleshooting, and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills.
  • Completion of undergraduate studies in computer science, management information systems, or other related degree. Technology experience or non-traditional technology certificates can be substituted for an undergraduate degree.
  • Four or more years of analysis and technology experience.
  • Proficiency in one or more programming language such as Java, C++, Python, JavaScript.
  • Strong knowledge of software development lifecycle.
  • Proven ability to tackle complex business and development problems.
  • Ability to thrive in a team environment.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with Guidewire PolicyCenter is highly desirable.
  • Familiarity with test automation frameworks, Agile methodologies, Test-Driven Development (TDD), and CI/CD practices is highly desirable.
  • Experience with Guidewire PolicyCenter and Personal Lines insurance products is preferred.
  • Insurance/financial services industry knowledge a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Designing, developing, executing, and maintaining automated and manual test cases aligned with Agile and Scrum practices.
  • Collaborating with developers, business analysts, product owners, and fellow testers to understand requirements, define test scenarios, and validate functionality based on user stories and acceptance criteria.
  • Performing functional, integration, regression, backend data validation, and performance testing activities to ensure product quality and stability.
  • Creating and maintaining automated test scripts.
  • Analyzing test results, documenting defects, and supporting defect resolution efforts through collaboration with development teams.
  • Actively participating in Agile ceremonies, including sprint planning, backlog refinement, daily standups, and retrospectives.
  • Contributing to continuous improvement efforts by identifying opportunities to enhance testing processes, automation coverage, and overall quality practices.
  • Effective communication and collaboration across teams and time zones are essential.
  • Analyzes, solutions, develops, tests, debugs, documents and deploys software according to standards in an agile environment.
