About The Position

The Risk and Policy Office at St. Thomas Elgin General Hospital (STEGH) supports all programs and services in accordance with applicable provincial and federal laws. Our facility is a fully accredited hospital serving the City of St. Thomas and all seven municipalities within the County of Elgin. STEGH offers a full range of services, including outpatient care, diagnostic imaging, inpatient acute care, emergency services, post-acute care, and regional satellite services. Reporting to the Manager, Risk and Policy, the Risk & Legal Specialist provides specialized operational expertise in enterprise risk management, claims administration, corporate insurance, and privacy compliance at St. Thomas Elgin General Hospital. The Specialist independently supports the identification, assessment, mitigation, and monitoring of clinical, operational, financial, legal, and reputational risks across the organization. Working collaboratively with leadership, staff, insurers, legal counsel, and external partners, the Specialist contributes to organizational resilience, regulatory compliance, and the delivery of safe, high‑quality patient care while upholding privacy and confidentiality obligations under applicable legislation.

Requirements

  • Completion of a two (2) year College diploma or certificate in a related health discipline (eg. Health Administration, Legal Administration, Paralegal, Privacy)
  • Minimum of three (3) years of practical experience preferably in a healthcare setting
  • Ability to gather high quality data, analyzing and problem solving while upholding standards across the organization
  • Knowledge in developing automated processes, programs and functions to compile data to reduce human error and save time
  • Knowledge and understanding of the following: PHIPA; FIPPA; PIPEDA; Privacy Act; IPC; Healthcare Insurance Reciprocal of Canada (HIROC); Excellent Care for All Act, Public Hospitals Act, Regulated Health Professionals Act, etc.
  • Ability to work with internal as well as external stakeholders (ie. Regional Privacy Office – LHSC); STEGH Counsel (Legal); Internal Leadership
  • Advanced written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to deliver engaging, informative and well-organized presentations
  • Demonstrated commitment to ongoing/continuous professional development
  • Demonstrated thoroughness and attention to detail
  • Proven ability to work independently, utilizing critical thinking skillset
  • Demonstrated acceptable performance record
  • Excellent attendance record

Responsibilities

  • Provides specialized operational expertise in enterprise risk management, claims administration, corporate insurance, and privacy compliance.
  • Independently supports the identification, assessment, mitigation, and monitoring of clinical, operational, financial, legal, and reputational risks across the organization.
  • Contributes to organizational resilience, regulatory compliance, and the delivery of safe, high‑quality patient care while upholding privacy and confidentiality obligations under applicable legislation.
  • Analyze trends from incidents, complaints, and claims to support continuous improvement, policy development, and system redesign.
  • Deliver education and training related to risk management practices, claims awareness, documentation standards, and legal risk reduction.
