About The Position

Working as part of the HR Operations team, and reporting to the Director, Payroll, the Payroll Specialist will assist in processing and distributing payrolls for 1,200+ employees in 21 total pay groups across North America.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration required; payroll certification is preferred;
  • Minimum of 2 - 4 years of Canadian payroll experience covering all aspects of payroll processing, with at least two (2) years in a comparably complex company required;
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage a large number of payrolls while working under tight deadlines;
  • Flexible and adaptable: willing and able to change priorities to meet team goals;
  • Strong analytical skills, attention to detail and sound judgment;
  • Motivated problem solver with the ability to sort through issues to create and recommend improvements;
  • Strong interpersonal skills to foster strong relationships at all levels in the organization;
  • Ability to deal sensitively with confidential information;
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Expert use of Microsoft applications (Outlook, Word, Excel and PowerPoint) required and experience working with Ultipro (HRIS) is desirable.

Nice To Haves

  • payroll certification is preferred
  • Working knowledge of US payroll preferred but not required;
  • Experience working in a public and/or fast growth company;
  • Understanding of collective agreement applications for payroll ;
  • experience working with Ultipro (HRIS) is desirable.

Responsibilities

  • Accurately and efficiently process payroll, which will require understanding, interpreting and applying tax laws and government regulations to payroll and benefit deductions, incentive compensation and retirement funding;
  • Review payroll transactions for completeness and reasonability;
  • Research and investigate payroll discrepancies;
  • Prepare special payments, complex pay and payroll deduction calculations;
  • Manage and maintain timely compliance for payroll, legal and tax reporting filings;
  • Support and assist with payroll-related SOX procedures and internal audits, ensuring payroll processes are in line with controls;
  • Respond to information requests and assist in the implementation of key initiatives impacting payroll, including acquisitions of new assets/employees;
  • Stay abreast and aware of new laws and regulations regarding payroll related issues;
  • Assist in identifying recurring issues, problematic trends, and in recommending changes in basic procedures.
