About The Position

The Royal Ontario Museum (ROM) is seeking a collaborative and solutions-oriented Specialist/HR Business Partner, Employee & Labour Relations to join its Human Resources team. This role reports to the AVP, Human Resources and will serve as a trusted advisor to leaders and employees across the Museum, providing expert guidance on employee and labour relations matters in a unionized environment. The position involves navigating complex workplace issues, interpreting employment legislation and collective agreements, and supporting organizational initiatives to strengthen workplace culture. This is a 12-month contract opportunity ideal for an HR professional who combines sound judgment with empathy, enjoys partnering with leaders to solve challenging people matters, and is passionate about balancing business objectives with exceptional employee experiences.

Requirements

  • Post-secondary education in Human Resources, Business Administration, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • 3–5 years of progressive Human Resources experience, with a strong focus on employee and labour relations in a unionized environment.
  • Solid knowledge of employment legislation, human rights legislation, and collective agreement interpretation.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage complex employee relations matters with professionalism, sound judgment, and discretion.
  • Strong relationship-building and coaching skills, with the ability to influence and support leaders at all organizational levels.
  • Excellent organizational and project coordination skills, with the ability to manage multiple priorities and meet competing deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, including experience preparing reports, documentation, presentations, and meeting materials.
  • Strong analytical and technical skills, including proficiency with Microsoft Office and experience working with Human Resources Information Systems (HRIS), preferably Dayforce or a similar platform.
  • A collaborative, solutions-oriented mindset with a commitment to continuous improvement, confidentiality, and the delivery of exceptional client service.

Nice To Haves

  • CHRP designation or actively working toward completion is preferred.
  • French language proficiency is considered an asset.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as a trusted advisor to leaders and employees, providing expert guidance on employee and labour relations matters while promoting fair, consistent, and legally compliant workplace practices.
  • Partner with leaders to proactively resolve complex workplace issues, manage cases effectively, and foster a respectful, inclusive, and high-performing work environment.
  • Interpret employment legislation, collective agreements, and organizational policies to support informed decision-making and mitigate organizational risk.
  • Support labour relations activities by coordinating Labour Management meetings, assisting with collective bargaining processes, and maintaining accurate documentation and records.
  • Strengthen organizational capability by developing and delivering training, resources, and tools that enhance leadership effectiveness and support positive employee experiences.
  • Improve HR operations by maintaining Employee & Labour Relations processes, systems, and reporting, ensuring accurate documentation and meaningful data that supports informed decision-making.
  • Coordinate key Human Resources initiatives, including attendance management, alternative work arrangements, learning and development programs, and the Job Review Committee process.
  • Contribute to a collaborative Human Resources team by identifying opportunities for continuous improvement, supporting departmental priorities, and helping advance ROM's people strategy.
