About The Position

The Health and Safety Specialist provides guidance to managers, supervisors and employees in promoting an OHS culture and creating a continuous improvement and proactive OHS management cycle. The Health and Safety Specialist is an integral member in ensuring that Atlantic Packaging Products safely manufactures a quality product.

Requirements

  • Ability to work full-time, onsite
  • Minimum 5 years leading health and safety in a unionized environment
  • Must have driver’s license and transportation
  • Must have completed or be in the process of completing a health and safety degree/certificate/diploma or professional designation
  • In depth knowledge of all relevant legislation and standards in the Province of Ontario
  • Excellent computer skills (Microsoft Word – Word, Excel, Outlook)
  • Desire to be hands on and “on the floor”
  • Excellent organizational, interpersonal, time management, problem solving and conflict resolution skills

Nice To Haves

  • Strong knowledge on H&S programs, such as, Machine guarding, Energy Isolation – Lockout/Tagout, Confined space entry and Working at Heights.

Responsibilities

  • Integrate into and become an active member of the site Management team(s)
  • Conduct Hazard Assessments, through task analysis, physical demands analysis, risk assessments and workplace inspections; Recommending and/or implementing corrective action
  • Contribute to the creation of and/or maintenance of instructional documents, such as work procedures, lockout tagout procedures and training documents
  • Deliver safety training to managers, supervisors, employees, and new hires, as determined by policy and programs
  • Responsible for the management of the OH&S system onsite. This includes personal protective equipment, emergency response, first aid, working at heights, workplace transportation, dock safety, lockout/tagout, confined space, industrial hygiene, ergonomics, contractor safety, and heat stress programs
  • Conduct gap analysis of safety programs through internal audits; developing and implementing a plan to address and remedy non-conformance issues
  • Lead and/or conduct incident investigations; site liaison for MOL visits; escalating significant incident and accident information to the Corporate level
  • Participate in the design, development and delivery of new employee orientation programs
  • Guide the Joint Health and Safety Committees (JHSC) and champion corrective actions and counter measures
  • Provide support during the life cycle of a WSIB claim
  • Create statistical data, analytical and assessment reports, as required
  • Perform other tasks or jobs as required
