About The Position

The Specialist, Gifted and Talented Education Programs, is supervised and evaluated by the Director, Advanced Learning Options, Office of the Chief of Special Education and Specialized Programs. The duties of the GATE specialist include, but are not limited to, supporting District GATE services at all K-12 schools, including differentiated instruction for gifted/advanced learners, Schools for Advanced Studies (SAS), Saturday GATE Conservatory of Fine Arts, GATE Student Advisory Council, GATE professional development, GATE identification in seven categories, and GATE verification of eligibility processes. The role involves collaborating with school site GATE coordinators and District Gifted/Talented Programs staff to support the effective implementation of the Targeted Identification Program (TIP) to address the disproportionality of underrepresented students in GATE programs. Additionally, the specialist will support increased Districtwide participation and engagement of parents/families of gifted, talented, and advanced learners through the planning and facilitation of GATE family workshops, events, and resources. The position also serves as a District liaison between Gifted/Talented Programs and other District departments, schools, families, community, and outside organizations. The specialist will assist with the analysis and preparation of GATE data, including the Annual GATE Report, and assist with the preparation of District reports, memoranda, bulletins, publications, and general communications related to the District GATE program. Other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • At least five (5) years of successful, full-time public school service in a certificated position(s)
  • A valid California Administrative Services Credential
  • An earned master’s degree or advanced degree of at least equivalent standard conferred a regionally-accredited college or university
  • Completion of required Multicultural Education and Master Plan coursework

  • Knowledge of current research in the field of Gifted and Talented Education

  • Evidence of ability to develop and conduct professional development on major tenets in the field of Gifted and Talented Education
  • Excellent communication skills, both oral and written
  • Effective use of technology and District data systems in performance of duties
