The associated work schedule will be 40 hours per week, Monday to Friday. Hybrid working (flexible, shared workstations and a combination of office and work from home) is standard for BHP. BHP offers domestic relocation assistance to support the successful incumbent in transitioning, if required. The starting annual salary range for this role is $99,000 - 124,000 CAD. Additional rewards includes a short-term incentive bonus program, health plan, personal spending account, dental, life insurance, and pension. We are seeking a motivated and proactive individual to join the Geoscience Data team within Exploration Excellence and Innovation, reporting directly to Lead Data Systems. This role is a full-time position based in Toronto, though other BHP office locations will be considered for the right candidate. Hybrid and flexible work arrangements are a standard across BHP. International travel may be required for up to 20% of time to support ongoing exploration activities. As the 'Specialist Data Systems', you will work closely with the Lead Data Systems to ensure accurate and reliable management of Exploration's data infrastructure; from cloud file shares and database migrations through to virtual desktop environments and Exploration applications. Your primary role will be to maintain data system workflows, including software licensing, data automations, SharePoint workspaces, and software/hardware support across Exploration. Your primary role will be to support Exploration teams by maintaining and improving data system workflows, software administration and budget management, automation and dashboarding, and M365 workspaces that enable efficient, reliable geoscience data operations. You will also advance geoscience data governance through documentation, training, user enablement, and frontline support for geoscientists across Exploration.

Requirements

  • Degree or Diploma in Geoscience, Earth Sciences, Geomatics, Computer Science or Information Systems from a reputable university.
  • Over 2 years of experience working with Mining or Exploration data, with familiarity in the use of applications such as Leapfrog, ArcGIS Pro, Seequent, acQuire, Geoscience Analyst, and similar tools.
  • Domain knowledge in geoscience disciplines, including Petrophysics, Geology, and Geochemistry.
  • Understanding data modeling concepts (relationships, schema, data structures) and experience with some of the following programming languages: Python, SQL, DAX, Power Query, and others.
  • Strong expertise in M365 tools and platforms (desktop and cloud), including SharePoint site design, development, and administration, with a proactive mindset to stay current and adopt emerging capabilities across the Microsoft ecosystem.
  • Strong experience in analytics and reporting, including dashboard development and data storytelling to support data-driven decision making (Power BI or similar tools preferred).
  • Advanced English skills.
  • Strong technical writing skills with ability to produce technical documentation and workflows. Ability to articulate complex ideas for technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to data quality.
  • Self-starting, organized individual with demonstrated curiosity and eagerness to operate within a cross-functional global team environment.
  • Passionate about geoscience data standards and governance, with a focus on delivering best-in-class software and data workflows to Exploration.

Responsibilities

  • Respond to day-to-day requests from geoscientists, taking a timely and customer-centric approach to troubleshooting and disseminating established best practices and protocols.
  • Prioritize multiple requests and ad-hoc tasks effectively, balancing urgent needs with ongoing initiatives.
  • Collaborate with other Geoscience Data team members (Geospatial, Drilling & Sampling, Central Data Platform and Integration) to deliver integrated geoscience data solutions, embodying a ‘one-team’ attitude.
  • Deploy workflows to geoscientists through training, workshops and support, taking a detail-oriented and customer-centric approach in supporting our multi-disciplinary geoscience teams.
  • Execute data migrations and develop automations to streamline repetitive tasks and improve operational efficiency.
  • Manage cloud-based file storage solutions, ensuring efficient data sharing and accessibility for geoscience teams
  • Design and develop visual analytics tools, including dashboards, that enable performance measurement, resource optimization, and comprehensive monitoring and reporting of geoscience data metrics and system operations.
  • Support virtual desktop environments, tracking usage, and providing assistance to both technical and non-technical users.
  • Manage Exploration Data platforms for collaborative document and data sharing across Exploration teams.
  • Provide hardware-related guidance to teams, particularly regarding data infrastructure required for field-based operations (e.g., field tablets).
  • Create clear documentation and process workflows for best practices and data management processes. Document and optimize processes for efficient data management, driving continuous improvement.
  • Maintain version-controlled, accessible documentation to ensure compliance with internal and external policies.
  • Define and manage user access rights to data and data systems, ensuring appropriate security controls.
  • Maintain and disseminate knowledge of our data quality, integrity, security and privacy protocols.
  • Act as a key liaison between geoscience Data and Technology teams, ensuring alignment on roadmap.
  • Integrate external vendor and third-party data into internal platforms, maintaining data quality and consistency.
  • Deliver internal training sessions to build capability in data tools, systems and workflows across Exploration teams. Provide technical troubleshooting and assistance to geoscientists when required.
  • Create and maintain digital knowledge resources (Tech Hub, newsletters) to support user self-service and adoption.
