About The Position

The Legal & Compliance team acts as the strategic guardian and ethical compass of the organization. As Specialist, Customs Operations, you will own day-to-day customs clearance operations for your assigned market portfolio. You will ensure goods clear customs within established SLAs by managing exceptions, interacting with customs brokers at the transactional level, and operating the systems that support compliant and timely declarations. Overall, this role directly supports the company's speed-to-market and customer experience objectives.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree or professional designation in International Trade, Supply Chain and Logistics, or a related field.
  • Minimum of 2-3 years of experience in a trade compliance, supply chain, or logistics role.
  • Direct experience with customs clearance operations in Canada (US and/or UK experience is considered an asset).
  • CSCB Certified Customs Specialist (CCS) or Certified Trade Compliance Specialist (CTCS) designation.
  • Advanced Microsoft Office / G Suite proficiency and comfort leveraging AI tools.

  • Ability to independently manage multiple concurrent clearance workflows across markets and prioritize exceptions based on business impact and SLA risk without supervisor guidance.
  • Applies structured methods to diagnose clearance exceptions, identify root causes, and distinguish between one-off issues and systemic patterns that warrant process changes.
  • Ability to independently manage and manipulate datasets for exception tracking, clearance metrics, and operational reporting using pivot tables, array formulas, and advanced conditional formatting.
  • Produces clear, professional communication with brokers, carriers, and internal stakeholders, articulating exception status and operational issues accurately without supervision.
  • Capacity to actively participate in process improvement or redesign initiatives and map out simple, linear departmental tasks under the direction of a project lead.

Responsibilities

  • Resolve customs clearance exceptions and export-related issues (including export filings, restricted/denied party screening, licenses, and permits) to ensure timely release of goods at the border in compliance with trade compliance policies.
  • Interact with customs brokers at the transactional level to resolve holds, data discrepancies, and release delays while making duty treatment decisions on individual shipments within established SOPs.
  • Monitor and manage customs clearance performance against SLAs, surfacing trends, patterns, and systemic issues to the Customs Operations Manager.
  • Operate and monitor customs and trade data systems, identify gaps, and recommend process or system improvements to support new programs and operating models as the company expands.
  • Collaborate with the compliance pillar on tariff classification questions, audit data requests, and trade data validation.
