About The Position

The Specialist, Corporate Risk supports Oceana’s day-to-day safety, security, risk management, insurance, and compliance activities. This role is hands-on and detail-oriented, helping to assess operational risks, coordinate safety procedures, maintain insurance documentation, and support internal control processes. The Specialist assists in implementing procedures, tools, and training to help keep staff safe, reduce exposure to risk, and ensure policies are followed across offices and programs. This is a 1-year, term limited, full-time position with benefits. The position reports to the Director of Operations, and is based in our Washington, DC office.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree preferred, ideally in business administration, public policy, risk management, communications, or related field
  • 3–5 years of relevant experience in operations, risk management, compliance, insurance administration, or safety/security-related functions.
  • Strong organizational skills with attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Ability to work with diverse teams and communicate clearly across departments.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office and able to maintain tracking tools and documentation.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and ability to follow through on tasks with minimal oversight.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct routine safety and security assessments for offices, domestic and international travel, field operations, and maritime activities to identify potential risks and suggest appropriate preventive measures.
  • Develop and implement emergency protocols for headquarters office, including staff training, practice drills, and emergency equipment maintenance.
  • Help maintain emergency plans, crisis response guidance, and security protocols for global offices, ensuring staff have access to current materials and know how to use them.
  • Serve as Crisis Response Coordinator, managing records, documentation, team updates, and information monitoring.
  • Prepare and deliver basic safety briefings, travel guidance, and awareness materials.
  • Track and follow up on safety-related issues to ensure actions are completed in a timely manner.
  • Assist in documenting incidents and coordinating responses with supervisors and the operations team.
  • Support maintenance of the organizational risk register, helping track risks, controls, and mitigation actions.
  • Assist with the coordination of insurance renewals, policy documentation, and coverage updates.
  • Process certificates of insurance, claims, and related documentation accurately and on schedule.
  • Gather and summarize insurance and risk-related data to support departmental reports.
  • Collaborate with departments to help identify risks and recommend practical mitigation steps.
  • Maintain accurate records, tracking tools, and shared documentation for safety, risk, insurance, and compliance activities.
  • Help coordinate vendor relationships, including insurance brokers, auditors, and service providers.
  • Assist in organizing and delivering training sessions on safety, risk prevention, and compliance topics.
  • Support updates to tools, templates, and procedures to improve operational efficiency and promote compliance.
  • Serve as a day-to-day contact for staff with questions about safety protocols, insurance, and basic compliance requirements.
