About The Position

The Specialist 2, Safety, will perform skilled independent work in the planning and coordination of annual inspections and compliance verification of various State of Florida and Hillsborough County Public School programs. This role involves managing assigned clerical staff and subordinate professional personnel, taking responsibility for the overall direction, coordination, and evaluation of assigned teams, and carrying out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with district policies and applicable state and federal laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; and addressing complaints and resolving problems.

Requirements

  • Three (3) years of increasingly responsible experience in insurance, risk management, or safety, with one (1) year of related management or supervisory experience required.
  • Must meet requirements for Fire Safety Inspector and Asbestos Inspector within six months of appointment.
  • Must have successfully completed the OSHA General Industry training course within six months of employment.
  • Reads and interprets documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instruction, and procedure manuals.
  • Writes routine reports and correspondence.
  • Speaks effectively before groups of individuals.
  • Adds, subtracts, multiplies, and divides in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
  • Computes rate, ratio, and percent and draws and interprets bar graphs.
  • Defines problems, collects data, establishes facts, and draws valid conclusions.
  • Interprets an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deals with several abstract and concrete variables.
  • Microsoft Office proficiency.

Responsibilities

  • Performs comprehensive safety, environmental, fire safety, sanitation, casualty, asbestos, and loss control audits and inspections.
  • Reviews applicable public agency, fire marshal, school safety reports, and coordinates corrective action.
  • Finalizes safety reports and compiles all reports and attachments as directed.
  • Evaluates the school’s compliance with controlled access requirements as well as evaluates what steps the school has taken to prevent elopement of students. This will be an annual unannounced inspection with results filed to the school, area coach, area superintendent, and school security with follow up inspections when problems arise outside of the inspection cycle.
  • Inspects each school during the year that will focus on the security and elopement posture, and when combined with required comprehensive Fire Safety and Casualty inspections, will result in four inspections being completed each year.
  • Investigates accidents and determines adequate preventive measures where required.
  • Serves as a liaison with local and regional fire prevention departments.
  • Advises schools and transportation concerning traffic and bus safety at bus stops, school bus ramps, traffic areas, and public access areas to schools.
  • Participates in training in security operations, controlled access, and elopement prevention.
  • Coordinates identification, control, storage, and removal of hazardous materials.
  • Conducts trainings as assigned.
  • Performs any other duties as assigned.
