About The Position

To assist the teacher to achieve teaching objectives by working with individual students or small groups to help them achieve the skill levels of the class as a whole. This role involves supporting students with special needs in various educational and community settings, ensuring their safety, and facilitating their learning and integration.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of English usage, vocabulary, grammar, and spelling.
  • Ability to perform moderately difficult clerical work.
  • Ability to give oral and written direction.
  • Ability to speak, read, and write in English.
  • Ability to compute basic math calculations.
  • 48 college units or an AA degree or higher.

Responsibilities

  • Administers, scores and records achievement and diagnostic tests for individual students as recommended by the teacher.
  • Works with individual students or small groups to reinforce learning.
  • Assists the teacher in developing strategies for reinforcing material based on student needs, interests, and abilities.
  • Operates and cares for classroom equipment.
  • Helps students master assigned equipment or instructional materials.
  • Distributes and collects workbooks, papers, and other instructional materials.
  • Guides independent study, enrichment work, and remedial work.
  • Assists with the supervision of students during drills, assemblies, play periods, and field trips.
  • Assists with large group activities like drill work, reading aloud, and storytelling.
  • Reads to students, listens to students read, and participates in oral communication.
  • Assists students in the library or media center.
  • Checks notebooks, corrects papers, and supervises testing and make-up work.
  • Checks and records student attendance.
  • Collects and records money.
  • Helps students with their clothing.
  • Assists with lunch, snack, and clear-up routines.
  • Assists with clean-up and toilet routines.
  • Alerts the teacher to any problems or special information about a student.
  • Serves as a source of information and help to substitute teachers.
  • Maintains high ethical behavior and confidentiality.
  • Participates in assigned in-service training.
  • Accompanies and assists individual students or small groups in vocational education classes, ensuring a safe environment.
  • Assists students on and off special education transportation.
  • Assists regular classroom teachers to facilitate mainstreaming of special education students.
  • Performs duties related to special education students under the direction of the school nurse.
  • Manages potentially assaultive behaviors.
  • Assists with adaptive technology or special equipment for special needs students.
  • Accompanies students in the community during community-based instruction.
  • May assist students in the swimming pool during Adaptive Physical Education.
