About The Position

WSP is seeking a Building Special Inspector for their New York City, NY office. This role involves ensuring construction compliance with plans, specifications, contract documents, and codified requirements through field inspections. Tasks include examining and evaluating concrete reinforcements, concrete placement, and building structures on projects of varying scale and complexity. The inspector will generate accurate reports and ensure work meets or exceeds industry standards for inspection and safety.

Requirements

High School Diploma.
Minimum of 5 years of relevant post education experience in discipline with prior construction inspection experience.
Valid state driver’s license.
ACI or ICC Concrete Construction Special Inspector certification required.
OSHA 10 Hr safety certification
Highly familiar with construction inspection principles, field inspection practices, process, methods and techniques.
Highly familiar with relevant construction codes, regulations, compliance practices, and record-keeping requirements.
Sound interpersonal and communication skills when interacting with others, expressing ideas effectively and professionally to a technical and non-technical audience.
Sound self-leadership with attention to detail, accuracy, multi-tasking, and prioritization of responsibilities in a dynamic work environment.
Ability to learn new techniques, perform multiple tasks simultaneously, follow instruction, and comply with company policies.
Ability to work independently with minimal supervision, as well as part of a team to meet business objectives.
Analytical mindset to exercise sound judgement in evaluating situations and making decisions.
Basic proficiency with technical writing, office automation, software, technology, spreadsheets, and tools.
Ability to provide input and feedback to others in the field such as subcontractors and work colleagues to consistently complete tasks safely, efficiently, and accurately according to specifications.
Proven track record of upholding workplace safety and ability to abide by WSP’s health, safety and drug/alcohol and harassment policies.
Ability to work schedules conducive to project-specific requirements that may extend beyond the typical workweek.
Occasional travel may be required depending on project-specific requirements.

Nice To Haves

Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering preferred.
ICC Prestressed Concrete Special Inspector certificate preferred.
ICC Structural Masonry Special Inspector certification preferred
ICC Structural Steel and Bolting Special Inspector certification preferred
AWS CWI or ICC Structural Welding Special Inspector certification preferred
DCA certified in NJ is preferred.
2+ years of experience in structural stability inspection

Responsibilities

Independently perform concrete, steel and masonry inspection in buildings from structural drawing, shop drawings, specifications, and other project documents.
Under minimal supervision, perform basic inspections of proposed and existing site conditions.
Provide sound engineering judgment and coordinate with engineers to any field issue that may arise.
Assist with verifying structural plans and specifications, recognizing basic construction, engineering, or survey problems and escalating any differences, errors, or technical problems for appropriate resolution.
Assist with reviewing structural plans and shop drawings.
Attend pre-construction meetings and assist with answering questions from contractors and other attendees.
Generate complete, accurate, and concise documentation and specifications related to inspection findings using electronic systems, written/oral feedback, photographs, drawings, diagrams, illustrations, spreadsheets, and reports.
Comply with client policies and procedures for inspection work under contract.
Comply with safety guidelines and site-specific procedures.
Complete training on assigned tasks.
Exhibit knowledge of current special inspection practices.
Work collaboratively with other professionals, engineers, inspectors, project managers, superintendent, and contractors.
Exercise responsible and ethical decision-making regarding company funds, resources and conduct, and adhere to WSP’s Code of Conduct and related policies and procedures.
Perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs.
